Ma al-Nas (With the People) is a book by the Syrian Islamic scholar, judge, and author Ali al-Tantawi (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE), first published in 1960 CE.
Context and Themes
Ma al-Nas appeared during a prolific period of publication for al-Tantawi's collected writings in Damascus, alongside other essay and narrative collections from the late 1950s and 1960, such as Suwar wa-Khawatir (1958), Qisas min al-Hayah (1959), Fi Sabil al-Islah (1959), Maqalat fi Kalimat (1959), Min Hadith al-Nafs (1960), and Fikar wa-Mabahith (1960).
The book reflects al-Tantawi's characteristic focus on social reform, moral counsel, and literary engagement with the everyday experiences of ordinary people, aiming at rectifying societal conduct, defending religious ethics, and addressing human affairs through accessible and engaging prose.
Publication History
Following its original publication in 1960 CE, the book became an established part of al-Tantawi's literary bibliography. In subsequent decades, his collected works—including Ma al-Nas—were reviewed, corrected, and re-edited by his grandson, Mujahid Ma'mun Dayraniyyah, and issued through Dar al-Manara in Jeddah.
