Ma al-Imam Abi Ishaq al-Shatibi fi Mabahith min Ulum al-Quran al-Karim wa Tafsirihi ("With Imam Abu Ishaq al-Shatibi in Inquiries on the Sciences of the Noble Quran and Its Exegesis") is a scholarly study by Shayi al-Asmari (Shayi ibn Abduh ibn Shayi al-Asmari) that examines the contributions and foundational principles of Quranic sciences (ulum al-Quran) and exegesis (tafsir) embedded throughout the writings of the eighth-century AH Andalusian jurist Abu Ishaq al-Shatibi .
Purpose and Scope
Al-Asmari composed the work to highlight al-Shatibi's stature as an authoritative theorist in Quranic exegesis and to direct researchers toward his hermeneutical principles, noting that al-Shatibi had predominantly been studied only as a legal theorist and jurist . Although al-Shatibi did not dedicate an independent book solely to Quranic sciences or tafsir, his broad legal and theological writings—chief among them al-Muwafaqat—contain valuable discussions and foundational rules that the author notes are occasionally absent even from standard reference manuals by scholars such as Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti .
Structure and Contents
The book is organized into an introduction, three main chapters, and a conclusion :
- Chapter One: A concise biography of al-Shatibi, covering his name and Arab lineage from Lakhm, his upbringing in Granada, his teachers, his students, his Maliki legal affiliation and theological positions, his opposition to religious innovations, biographical evaluations, his literary output, and his death .
- Chapter Two: Twelve sections exploring Quranic sciences in al-Shatibi's thought, addressing: occasions of revelation (asbab al-nuzul); reported narratives in the Quran; Quranic methods of inducement and deterrence (al-targhib wa-l-tarhib); classifications of sciences attributed to the Quran; allusive exegesis (al-tafsir al-ishari); interpreting Medinan surahs in light of Meccan surahs; moderation in exegesis; the distinction between praiseworthy and blameworthy personal opinion (ra'y); the ruling on Quranic translation; scientific exegesis (al-tafsir al-ilmi); inconsequential causes of exegetical disagreement; and Arabized vocabulary (al-muarrab) .
- Chapter Three: Ten sections devoted to al-Shatibi's exegetical applications, examining: interpreting the Quran by the Quran; interpretation through the Prophetic Sunnah; interpretation using reports of the Prophet's Companions; interpretation through the Successors and their followers; al-Shatibi's critical evaluations and individual exegetical views; Quranic grammar and rhetoric; variant readings (qiraat) and their linguistic justification; the interpretation of theological verses; legal rulings derived from the Quran; and utilizing Islamic legal theory (usul al-fiqh) in exegesis .
Methodology
Al-Asmari surveyed al-Shatibi's published corpus, primarily extracting texts from al-Muwafaqat—relying mainly on the edition prepared by Mashhur Hasan while consulting that of Abdullah Diraz—and collated the quotations against their original sources . Passages omitted within citations are marked with ellipses . The author provided analytical commentary across the sections, added surah names and verse numbers, verified and graded hadiths not found in the Sahihayn, traced historical reports (athar), documented variant readings from standard manuals, defined obscure terms, provided brief biographies of cited authorities, and referenced instances where later exegetes utilized al-Shatibi's insights . The book concludes with five analytical indices covering Quranic verses, Prophetic traditions, historical reports, bibliography, and subject topics .
Findings and Recommendations
In the conclusion, al-Asmari notes that al-Shatibi's mastery of Quranic sciences and tafsir equaled his expertise in jurisprudence and legal theory, though his writings occasionally cite weak hadiths and historical reports . The author observes that multiple modern researchers have drawn on al-Shatibi's exegetical views—including Muhammad Husayn al-Dhahabi, Fahd al-Rumi, Abd al-Aziz al-Qari, and Khalid al-Sabt . He recommends that future researchers undertake specialized projects to collect and annotate al-Shatibi's specific interpretations of Quranic verses, his rules of exegesis, and his contributions to Quranic syntax and variant readings .
