Ma'a al-Mushakkikin fi al-Sunna (With the Doubters Regarding the Sunna) is a contemporary work of hadith defense and polemics by the Yemeni scholar and professor of hadith at Sanaa University, Abd al-Rahman al-Khamisi (b. 1379 AH / 1959 CE) . The book brings together a collection of refutations against modern writers and polemicists who cast doubt on the authority of the prophetic Sunna and the canonical hadith collections .

Background and Composition

The material in the work originated as separate responses written by al-Khamisi to contemporary publications challenging hadith . His refutation of the Egyptian lawyer Ahmad Abduh Mahir was initially published in installments on his Facebook page and other social media platforms under the title Ma'a al-Mushakkikin fi al-Sunna . An earlier set of responses directed at the Yemeni writer Adnan al-Junayd had appeared as a serial in a local newspaper and was later printed as a standalone treatise titled Difa' 'an al-Sahihayn (Defense of the Two Sahihs) .

Following suggestions from colleagues to collect these polemical pieces into a unified book, al-Khamisi commissioned Faruq Yahya Muhammad al-Hajj to edit the texts, verify their hadiths, and organize the compilation . To provide a foundational framework, al-Khamisi prefixed the refutations with an academic study on the characteristics of the Sunna that he had previously published in a peer-reviewed journal . The edited collection was issued in 1442 AH / 2020 CE .

Structure and Contents

The book opens with an introduction asserting that the Sunna constitutes an independent source of Islamic legislation alongside the Quran, and that both verbal (qawliyya) and practical ('amaliyya) traditions are equally binding upon Muslims . The main text is organized into three primary sections:

  • Chapter One: An introductory study detailing the characteristics of the prophetic Sunna, defining its authoritative status (hujjiyya), establishing the obligation of acting upon it, and outlining the legal rulings concerning those who reject it .
  • Chapter Two: A detailed rebuttal of the tract Suwar min al-Diya' al-Fiqhi li-l-Fuqaha' (Examples of Jurisprudential Loss Among the Jurists) by Ahmad Abduh Mahir . It addresses Mahir's rejection of verbal hadiths, his claims of contradiction between the prophetic traditions and the Quran, and his attacks against the compilers of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim .
  • Chapter Three: Titled Dahd Mata'in al-Aghbiya' fi Sunnat Sayyid al-Anbiya' (Refuting the Slanders of the Foolish Against the Sunna of the Master of Prophets), this section responds to the tract Risalat Tanzih Sayyid al-Anbiya' 'an Aqwal al-Aghbiya' by the Yemeni polemicist Adnan al-Junayd .
