Kitab Sirat al-Nabi (full title: Kitāb Sīrat al-Nabī ﷺ li-l-‘Allāmah Shiblī al-Nu‘mānī wa-Takmilatuh li-l-‘Allāmah al-Sayyid Sulaymān al-Nadwī: ‘Arḍ wa-Taḥlīl) is an analytical research monograph written in Arabic by the Indian hadith scholar Taqi al-Din al-Nadwi . It provides a systematic introduction, methodological analysis, and critical evaluation of the seven-volume Urdu encyclopedic biography of the Prophet Muhammad, Sirat al-Nabi, begun by Shibli al-Nu'mani (d. 1332 AH) and completed by his disciple Sulayman al-Nadwi .
Background and Purpose
The treatise was prepared following an invitation extended to Taqi al-Din al-Nadwi to participate in the scholarly conference entitled ‘Ināyat al-Mamlakah bi-l-Sunnah wa-l-Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah ("The Kingdom's Care for the Sunnah and Prophetic Biography"), organized under the auspices of the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Quran in Medina in 1424 AH . The author selected the work of al-Nu‘mānī and al-Nadwī due to its status as the most significant contribution produced by Indian scholars in the field of prophetic biography—characterized by Abu al-Hasan Ali al-Nadwi as an encyclopedia covering the Sirah, theology (kalam), and divine oneness (tawhid) . Al-Nadwi's stated objective was to introduce this major Indian work to Arabic readers and provide a scholarly assessment supporting its translation into Arabic under expert supervision .
Structure and Content
The study is organized around eight core headings :
- Biographies of the Authors: A concise overview of the lives of Shibli al-Nu'mani and Sulayman al-Nadwi .
- Context of Composition: An examination of the factors and motivations that prompted the writing of the Urdu multi-volume biography .
- Overview and Volume-by-Volume Survey: A detailed thematic breakdown of the contents of Sirat al-Nabi, surveying each volume individually .
- Engagement with Orientalism: An analysis of the authors' direct familiarity with the works of Western Orientalists and their refutations of Orientalist claims, including Sulayman al-Nadwi's marginal rebuttals against David Samuel Margoliouth regarding the migration to Abyssinia .
- Methodology of Transmission and Criticism: An assessment of how al-Nu‘mānī and al-Nadwī verified, analyzed, and weighed conflicting historical and hadith narrations (tarjih) .
- Critical Observations: An evaluation pointing out scholarly areas requiring further work, such as verifying (takhrij) the narrations, assessing their authenticity grades according to hadith standards, and updating citations using classical sources that were unpublished during the authors' lifetime—such as Ibn Kathir's al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah, which was unavailable to al-Nu‘mānī and only partially accessible in print during al-Nadwī's era .
- Summary of Findings: A synthesis of the analytical results of the research .
- Recommendations and Proposals: Specific recommendations submitted to the symposium, chiefly urging the institutional adoption of a complete Arabic translation project executed by a specialized committee of hadith, Sirah, and Islamic history scholars, projecting that the complete translated text would span roughly ten Arabic volumes .
