Kitab Jumal al-Gharaib lil-Naysaburi wa-Ahammiyatuhu fi Ilm Gharib al-Hadith (The Book Jumal al-Gharaib by al-Naysaburi and Its Importance in the Science of Gharib al-Hadith) is a scholarly research study by Muhammad Ajmal al-Islahi analyzing the manuscript work Jumal al-gharaib by the sixth-century AH scholar Bayan al-Haqq al-Naysaburi (Mahmud ibn Abi al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn al-Naysaburi) . The study was prepared for a symposium on the prophetic Sunnah and biography organized by the King Fahd Glorious Quran Printing Complex in Medina .

Structure and Content

The work is organized into an introduction (tamhid) and two chapters :

  • Introduction: Provides an overview of the origins and historical development of the genre of gharib al-hadith (rare and obscure hadith vocabulary), discussing its major classical compositions, their methodologies, and an appraisal of which titles have been published or remain in manuscript form .
  • Chapter One: Dedicated to the biography of Bayan al-Haqq al-Naysaburi and his writings . The author cites the brief biography compiled by Yaqut al-Hamawi—which was relied upon by al-Suyuti and others—and augments it with biographical details derived from al-Naysaburi's own works, while also refuting claims that al-Naysaburi traveled to Aleppo to teach at the Halawiyyah Madrasah .
  • Chapter Two: Examines al-Naysaburi's Jumal al-gharaib, including its purpose, source materials, internal arrangement, abridgment and lexicographical methodology, and specific critical observations .

Significance and Characteristics

The study highlights Jumal al-gharaib as an important late work in the field of hadith lexicography due to two primary features :

  1. Preservation of Lost Early Sources: Al-Naysaburi explicitly identified fifteen sources in his preface, designating abbreviations for each before quoting their hadith citations and interpretations . Eight of these works are no longer extant, including early treatises on gharib al-hadith by al-Nadr ibn Shumayl (d. 203 AH), Qutrub (d. 206 AH), Abu Ubaydah (d. 210 AH), al-Asma'i (d. 216 AH), and Abu Sa'id al-Darir, as well as an otherwise untraced work titled Kitab al-Ighfal by Abu Bakr al-Hanbali .
  2. Topical Arrangement: Rather than using alphabetical order, al-Naysaburi structured his collection topically along the lines of hadith collections (jawami and masanid), an approach in gharib literature previously undertaken only by Abu Adnan al-Sulami .

In preparing the research, al-Islahi utilized a transcribed section of the text provided by Muhammad Rashid Ayyub al-Islahi, who was editing the book based on three manuscript copies .
