'The Book of Monotheism and the Solace of the Monotheists’ Eyes in Verifying the Call of the Prophets and Messengers') is a doctrinal treatise and commentary on Islamic monotheism by the Najdi scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan Al al-Shaykh (d. 1285 AH / 1868 CE) .

Scope and Contents

The work was composed as a series of concise explanatory glosses (hawashi) on Kitab al-Tawhid, a foundational theological text written by the author's grandfather, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (d. 1206 AH) . The text focuses on the central mission of the prophets and messengers: establishing the exclusive worship of God alone and warning against polytheism (shirk) . It addresses various practices deemed idolatrous or compromising to strict monotheism, such as the wearing of amulets (tama'im), seeking blessings (tabarruk) from stones and trees, and directing acts of devotion—specifically animal slaughter (dhabh) and religious vows (nudhur)—to anything other than God .

Reception and Relation to Other Works

The work is one of two major commentaries on Kitab al-Tawhid produced by Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan, alongside his more extensive commentary, Fath al-Majid . When Muhammad Hamid al-Fiqi prepared his edition of Fath al-Majid, he drew extensively upon Qurrat Uyun al-Muwahhidin in his accompanying annotations .

Publication History

The treatise has been issued in multiple print editions and anthologies:

  • An early edition edited by Muhammad Rashid Rida, published in Cairo by Matbaat al-Manar in 1346 AH as part of Majmu'at al-Tawhid al-Najdiyya (pp. 297–524) .
  • A subsequent inclusion in Majmu'at al-Tawhid al-Najdiyya, published by al-Matba'a al-Salafiyya in Cairo in 1375 AH (pp. 9–213) .
  • An undated single-volume edition by Dar Misr li-l-Tiba'a in Cairo (318 pages) .
  • A critical edition edited by Bashir Muhammad Uyun, published in Damascus by Maktabat Dar al-Bayan and Maktabat al-Mu'ayyad (1411 AH), which placed the original Kitab al-Tawhid at the top of each page and the glosses beneath it .
