Kitab al-Muharaba min Muwatta Ibn Wahb (The Book of Brigandage from Ibn Wahb's Muwatta) is an early legal and hadith text compiled by the Egyptian scholar and jurist ‘Abd Allah ibn Wahb (125–197 AH / 743–812 CE), preserving a dedicated section on brigandage and unlawful warfare (muharaba) from his transmission and recension of the Muwatta materials.

Background and Context

Ibn Wahb was a leading companion of Imam Malik ibn Anas, whom he accompanied from 148 AH until Malik's death, hearing and memorizing the Muwatta directly from him. Classical biographical authorities, including Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi, Ibn Khallikan, and Ibn Nasir al-Din, note that Ibn Wahb authored both an extensive recension (al-Muwatta al-Kabir) and an abridged version (al-Muwatta al-Saghir).

Manuscript and Publication

A rare early fragment of Ibn Wahb's transmission containing Kitab al-Muharaba survives in the library of the Great Mosque of Kairouan in Tunisia under shelfmark no. 244, copied on parchment in an archaic Kufic script. Muhammad Habib Allah al-Shinqiti reported that another copy of Ibn Wahb's recension was held at the Feyzullah library in Istanbul.

The text of Kitab al-Muharaba min Muwatta Ibn Wahb was edited by the German scholar Miklos Muranyi and published by Dar al-Gharb al-Islami in Beirut in 2002.
