Kifayat al-Nabih fi Sharh al-Tanbih (Sufficiency of the Discerning in Explaining the Admonition) is an extensive commentary on Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi's foundational Shafi'i legal compendium, al-Tanbih, authored by the Shafi'i jurist Ibn al-Rif'ah (645–710 AH / 1247–1310 CE) .
Composition and Scope
Al-Tanbih was among the most widely circulated legal manuals within the Shafi'i school, prompting dozens of commentaries, abridgments, and versifications . Ibn al-Rif'ah composed Kifayat al-Nabih as a comprehensive, multi-volume exposition of the text, spanning approximately twenty volumes in classical manuscript estimates . Bibliographers such as Hajji Khalifa noted that no commentary of comparable breadth and richness of legal points was written on al-Tanbih . Although Ibn al-Rif'ah's death year is established as 710 AH, some bibliographical accounts record it as 716 AH .
Method and Legal Approach
Ibn al-Rif'ah structured the commentary by opening each major book (kitab) and chapter (bab) with an introductory section defining its terminology linguistically and technically, followed by establishing its legal basis through texts from the Quran and Sunnah . Throughout the work, he frequently corroborated legal rulings using textual evidence from the Quran, the Sunnah, and consensus (ijma'), often citing the extraction (takhrij) of prophetic traditions and noting the assessments of hadith scholars regarding their authenticity .
The commentary is characterized by extensive legal derivation (tafri'), detailed differentiation between the earlier (qadim) and later (jadid) rulings of al-Shafi'i, and thorough documentation of the opinions, variants (wujuh), and derivations of earlier authorities within the school . Ibn al-Rif'ah supplemented al-Shirazi's text by recording variant opinions omitted in the original manual, introducing them with phrases such as "beyond what the Shaykh mentioned are two or more opinions," and analogizing parallel legal scenarios . He also clarified obscure vocabulary (gharib), vocalized terminology, addressed potential objections to the base text, and advanced independent legal preferences and corrections, at times departing from the authoritative determinations of al-Nawawi .
Reception, Abridgments, and Critical Works
Kifayat al-Nabih became an essential reference for later Shafi'i scholars . Majd al-Din al-Zankaluni (d. 740 AH) prepared a six-volume selection and synthesis based on it and al-Rafi'i, titled Tuhfat al-Nabih fi Sharh al-Tanbih . Shihab al-Din Ibn al-Naqib (d. 769 AH) authored an abridgment of the work in a single volume .
Jamal al-Din al-Isnawi (d. 772 AH) composed a critical companion identifying errors and oversights in the commentary, titled al-Hidayah ila Awham al-Kifayah (Guidance Regarding the Errors of the Kifayah) . Al-Suyuti undertook a project to extract and document the hadiths cited in the work under the title al-'Inayah, though he did not complete it .
Manuscripts and Modern Publication
Manuscript copies of the commentary are preserved in repositories such as the Chester Beatty Library (MSS 3061 and 3555), alongside an incomplete manuscript dated 749 AH at Maktabat al-Shawish in Beirut . Portions of the text were also edited as academic theses at the College of Sharia at Umm al-Qura University . A complete edition of Kifayat al-Nabih, edited by Majdi Muhammad Surur Baslum based on multiple manuscripts, was published in 21 volumes in Beirut in 2009, featuring al-Isnawi's al-Hidayah ila Awham al-Kifayah appended in its twentieth volume and referenced in the margins .
