Khutbat al-Jumua fi al-Kitab wa al-Sunna (The Friday Sermon in the Quran and the Sunnah) is a research treatise by Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Hamad examining the rulings, status, and prophetic precedents of the Friday sermon in Islamic law.
Background and Purpose
The treatise was composed following an assignment by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Da'wah, and Guidance in Saudi Arabia to participate in the First Forum for Imams and Preachers in the Kingdom. The author, Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Hamad, served as an instructor at the Scientific Institute in al-Zulfi and the preacher (khatib) of al-Jami' al-Awsat (the Middle Mosque) in al-Zulfi.
Structure and Contents
The work is organized into an introductory preface (tamhid), five chapters, and a conclusion:
- Preface: Discusses the elevated status of Friday in Islam and its unique characteristics in prophetic traditions.
- Chapter One (Oration in Islam): Outlines six categories of Islamic sermons—admonitory, social, celebratory, judicial, martial, and political—and highlights the importance and regular recurrence of the Friday sermon as a universal vehicle for public instruction.
- Chapter Two (The Friday Sermon in the Holy Quran): Analyzes the Quranic verses concerning Friday in Surat al-Jumu'ah and classical commentary regarding the naming of the day.
- Chapter Three (The Friday Sermon in the Pure Sunnah): Divided into eight sections covering the validity of Friday prayer without a sermon, attentive listening to the sermon, the description and manner of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ preaching, an exemplary Friday sermon delivered by him in Medina, stepping over congregants' shoulders during the sermon, sleeping during the address, performing the prayer of greeting the mosque (tahiyyat al-masjid) during the sermon or call to prayer (adhan), and making supplications for rain (istisqa) from the pulpit.
- Chapter Four: Details broader legal and jurisprudential issues (masail fiqhiyya) concerning the sermon.
- Chapter Five: Offers practical advice, cautions, and proposals for Friday preachers.
