Khutab al-Masjid al-Haram (Sermons of the Grand Mosque) is a compilation of Islamic sermons delivered from the pulpit of the Grand Mosque in Mecca by various imams and preachers.
Content and Structure
The work collects the full transcripts of Friday and Eid sermons delivered at the Grand Mosque. Each entry is organized chronologically by its delivery date according to the Hijri calendar, followed by the specific title of the sermon and the name of the preacher.
Preachers represented in the collection include:
- Abd al-Rahman al-Sudais, with sermons including Al-I'tibār bi-Inqiḍā' al-A'mār ("Reflecting on the Passing of Lifespans"), Al-Ruqyā al-Shar'iyyah: Aḥkām wa-Ādāb ("Legal Incantation: Rulings and Etiquettes"), and Wujūb al-Ijtimā' wa-Nabdhdh al-Furqah ("The Obligation of Unity and Rejection of Division").
- Salih ibn Humayd, with addresses such as Khuṭūrat al-Namīmah ("The Danger of Calumny") and the Eid al-Fitr sermon addressing optimism and pessimism in contemporary affairs.
- Sa'ud al-Shuraym, with topical sermons including Tadabbur al-Amthāl fī al-Qur'ān al-Karīm ("Contemplating Parables in the Noble Qur'an").
Method and Themes
Each sermon follows the homiletic format divided into two parts (al-khuṭbah al-ūlā and al-khuṭbah al-thāniyah). They open with praise of God and testimony of faith, followed by explicit calls to piety (taqwa). The discourses integrate citations from the Quran, prophetic hadiths, classical Arabic poetry, and historical statements to address topics spanning spiritual development, legal rulings, Islamic ethics, social cohesion, and the affairs of the broader Muslim community.
