Khulasat al-Afkar Sharh Mukhtasar al-Manar (The Quintessence of Thoughts: A Commentary on the Abridgment of al-Manar) is a work on legal theory (usul al-fiqh) by the Hanafi jurist and traditionist Ibn Qutlubugha (d. 879 AH / 1474 CE) . It is a commentary on Mukhtasar al-Manar, an abridgment composed by Tahir ibn al-Hasan ibn Habib al-Halabi (d. 808 AH / 1406 CE) of the widely studied Hanafi primer Manar al-Anwar by Hafiz al-Din al-Nasafi (d. 710 AH / 1310 CE) .

Background and Composition

Ibn Qutlubugha composed the work through dictation after his student, 'Uthman ibn Aghlubak al-Halabi al-Hanafi, read Ibn Habib's Mukhtasar al-Manar before him . In the introduction, the author states that his objective was to provide an analytical commentary that resolves and clarifies the wording of the abridged base text .

Content and Method

The commentary systematically follows the structure of Mukhtasar al-Manar, unpacking its concise formulations and addressing standard Hanafi legal theoretical principles . It covers the primary legal proofs, starting with the Quran and its linguistic aspects, including divisions of wording (alfaz), meanings, modes of textual indication, and usage . It examines the legal implications of specific terms (al-khass), imperatives and their obligatoriness (wujub), repetition in commands, as well as modes of fulfilling obligations through timely performance (ada') and compensatory make-up (qada') . Ibn Qutlubugha frequently references internal Hanafi divergences, such as the positions of the jurists of Iraq versus those of Samarkand, and notes specific rulings associated with figures like Zufar .

Glosses and Editions

Later scholars engaged with Ibn Qutlubugha's commentary through sub-commentaries and annotations:

  • Mansur Abu al-Khayr al-Bilbaysi al-Hanafi wrote a supercommentary titled Jawahir al-Afkar 'ala Mukhtasar Mukhtasar Kitab al-Manar .
  • An anonymous marginal gloss (ta'liq) was copied in 1320 AH and is held in the National Library of Tunisia .

In modern scholarship, the book was edited in a single volume by Zuhayr ibn Nasir al-Nasir and published in 1413 AH / 1993 CE by Dar Ibn Kathir and Dar al-Kalim al-Tayyib . It was also edited by Fakhr al-Din Sayyid Muhammad Qanit as an academic thesis at King Saud University in 1413 AH, and separately edited by Hafiz Thana' Allah al-Zahidi and published by Dar Ibn Hazm .
