Kharidat al-Qasr wa Jaridat al-Asr: Qism Shuara al-Maghrib wa al-Andalus, Juz 2 (The Pearl of the Castle and the Periodical of the Era: Section on the Poets of the Maghreb and al-Andalus, Volume 2) is part of the comprehensive biographical anthology of sixth-century AH poets compiled by the historian and stylist al-Imad al-Isbahani (519–597 AH / 1125–1201 CE) .
Context and Scope
The parent work, Kharidat al-Qasr wa Jaridat al-Asr, was conceived as a continuation (dhayl) to Zinat al-Dahr by Abu al-Ma'ali al-Haziri, which itself continued Dumyat al-Qasr by al-Bakharzi, continuing Yatimat al-Dahr by al-Tha'alibi, which traced back to al-Bari' by Harun ibn Ali al-Munajjim . Spanning roughly ten volumes, the work documents poets who lived after 500 AH up to 572 AH (and in some accounts up to 592 AH) .
al-Imad organized his compendium along geographical lines into major regional sections, including Iraq, Syria (al-Sham), Egypt, Persia (al-Ajam), and the western Islamic world (al-Maghrib wa al-Andalus) . The section devoted to the Maghreb and al-Andalus covers the literary figures, scholars, and poets of North Africa and Muslim Spain during the sixth century AH . al-Imad subsequently authored his own supplement to the entire compendium under the title al-Sayl ala al-Dhayl .
Method and Significance
In compiling this section, al-Imad preserved biographical data, historical anecdotes, and poetic selections for Andalusian and Maghrebi figures who lived slightly after the period documented in Ibn Bassam's al-Dhakhira fi Mahasin Ahl al-Jazira . Rather than merely transcribing texts, al-Imad wrote in the tradition of critical biographical anthologies (kutub al-tabaqat), interspersing his entries with artistic judgments and literary evaluations .
Modern Editions
The second volume of the Maghreb and al-Andalus section has appeared in several modern critical editions:
- An edition edited by Azartash Azarnoush, revised and augmented by Muhammad al-Marzuqi, published in Tunis by al-Dar al-Tunisiyya lil-Nashr in 1971, with later revisions prepared alongside Muhammad al-Arusi al-Matwi and al-Jilani bin al-Hajj Yahya .
- An edition edited by Umar al-Dasuqi and Ali Abd al-Azim, published in Cairo by Dar Nahdat Misr in 1969 .
