Khamsa Ahadith Takhrij Ibn Balban (Five Hadiths Extracted by Ibn Balban), also titled Juz' fihi khamsat ahadith 'an al-a'imma al-khamsa, is a short Hadith treatise compiled by the Damascene traditionist Ala' al-Din Abu al-Qasim 'Ali ibn Balban al-Mushrif al-Nasiri (d. 684 AH / 1285 CE) .
Purpose and Structure
Ibn Balban compiled the work from his original audition records (usul sama'atihi) to document five distinct narrations transmitted through five major Hadith masters: Ahmad ibn Hanbal, al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, and al-Nasa'i .
The principal technical feature of the collection is elevated transmission ('uluww): exactly five intermediaries separate Ibn Balban from each of the five respective Imams in sequential order . Ibn Balban noted in his introduction that this short chain represented an exceptional level of elevation unequaled across other regions . He begins the collection with the narration through Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, highlighting his steadfastness during the trial (al-mihna) and providing his lineage tracing back to 'Adnan .
Transmission and Publication
The booklet was transmitted from Ibn Balban on the authority of Abd al-Mu'min ibn 'Abd al-Haqq through a general authorization (ijaza 'amma) granted in 682 AH .
The work was edited and annotated by Riyad Husayn al-Ta'i and published in a single volume by Dar al-Mughni in Riyadh in 1425 AH / 2004 CE .
