Kayfa Tahfaz al-Quran al-Karim (How to Memorize the Noble Quran) is a practical treatise on Quranic memorization and retention by Abd al-Rabb Nawab al-Din, a faculty member at the Islamic University of Madinah .

Background and Purpose

The author was prompted to write the guide after observing that many young Muslims felt an urge to memorize the Quran but found the task daunting, with some doubting whether it was possible to complete if they had not begun in early childhood . He composed the treatise to combine traditional scholarly principles with contemporary methods in an accessible style suited to readers of varying cultural backgrounds . Nawab al-Din completed the final draft on Wednesday morning, 5 Safar 1407 AH (October 1986 CE), in Madinah .

Structure and Contents

The work is organized into an introduction, two main chapters, and a conclusion :

  • Introduction (Tamhid): Covers the virtues of the Quran and its memorizers throughout Islamic history, the legal ruling (hukm shar'i) regarding memorization, and its personal and spiritual benefits .
  • Chapter One: Details the practical methodology of memorization across four sections, including the definition of memorization (hifz), prerequisite factors (such as personal readiness, time management, and motivation), fundamental means (the roles of the learner and instructor, holistic versus piecemeal memorization, and structured schedules and models), and secondary assisting techniques .
  • Chapter Two: Addresses protecting memorized portions from being forgotten, divided into two sections discussing the causes of forgetting (particularly blameworthy neglect) and preventative practices, such as frequent repetition, regular review, listening to others, and reflecting on the meanings .
  • Conclusion (Khatimah): Provides a summary of the study alongside recommendations directed at supervisors of Quran memorization societies and curriculum planners in Muslim countries . It also includes proposals such as establishing a specialized Quranic body under the Muslim World League in Mecca to oversee technical supervision and support for memorizers .
