Kashf ma Alqahu Iblis min al-Bahraj wa al-Talbis ala Qalb Dawud ibn Jirjis (Arabic: كشف ما ألقاه إبليس من البهرج والتلبيس على قلب داود بن جرجيس, lit. 'Unveiling What Satan Cast of Counterfeit and Deception upon the Heart of Dawud ibn Jirjis') is a theological refutation written by the Hanbali scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan Al al-Shaykh (d. 1285 AH / 1868 CE) against the Iraqi scholar Dawud ibn Sulayman ibn Jirjis (1231–1299 AH) .

Title and Attribution

The work is best known by the title Kashf ma Alqahu Iblis min al-Bahraj wa al-Talbis ala Qalb Dawud ibn Jirjis, which appears explicitly in the prefaces of its three primary manuscript copies . It is also known under alternative titles in various sources and editions, including al-Qawl al-Fasl al-Nafis fi al-Radd ala al-Muftari Dawud ibn Jirjis (the title given to it by Muhammad Hamid al-Fiqi), Ta'sis al-Taqdis fi al-Radd ala Ibn Jirjis (recorded by Ibn Qasim in al-Durar al-Saniyyah), and Minhaj al-Tanzihi fi al-Radd ala al-Mubtil al-Jahul al-Safih (found at the end of the base manuscript) .

Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan confirmed his authorship by explicitly referring to it in his commentary Fath al-Majid, stating that he authored a rebuttal against Ibn Jirjis on the question of intermediaries (al-wasa'it), as well as in al-Durar al-Saniyyah, where he noted that he answered Ibn Jirjis across several quires . Contemporary scholars such as Ahmad ibn Isa also documented the work among Abd al-Rahman's writings .

Background and Contents

The treatise was written in response to Dawud ibn Jirjis, a Baghdadi scholar who traveled to Najd and authored polemical works—most notably Sulh al-Ikhwan—defending practices such as seeking intercession (shafa'ah), supplication, and seeking aid (istighatha) through the dead and righteous intermediaries .

In Kashf ma Alqahu Iblis, Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan argues against Ibn Jirjis's positions, maintaining that asking the deceased for supplication or directing acts of worship and deliverance (istighatha) to intermediaries constitutes major polytheism (shirk akbar) . In advancing his theological arguments, Abd al-Rahman draws upon earlier classical authorities, citing works such as Ibn Taymiyyah's Kitab al-Istighatha fi al-Radd ala al-Bakri and Ibn al-Qayyim's al-Sawa'iq al-Mursalah .

Related Polemics and Editions

The treatise formed part of an extensive scholarly exchange surrounding Ibn Jirjis's writings . Other scholars composed dedicated rebuttals against him, including:

  • Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman Abu Butayn (d. 1282 AH), who wrote Ta'sis al-Taqdis and al-Intisar .
  • Abd al-Latif ibn Abd al-Rahman (the author's son), who authored Minhaj al-Ta'sis wa-al-Taqdis (later completed by Mahmud Shukri al-Alusi as Fath al-Mannan), Tuhfat al-Talib wa-al-Jalis, and Dala'il al-Rusukh .
  • Nu'man al-Alusi, who wrote Shaqa'iq al-Nu'man fi Radd Shaqa'iq Dawud ibn Sulayman .
  • Ahmad ibn Isa, who wrote al-Radd ala Shubuhat al-Musta'inin bi-Ghayr Allah .

The book has been edited by Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah al-Zir Al Hamad and published by Dar al-Asimah in Riyadh .
