Kashf al-Litham Sharh Umdat al-Ahkam (Unveiling the Veil: Commentary on the Pillar of Rulings) is a legal hadith commentary by the Hanbali scholar Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Safarini (1114–1188 AH / 1702–1774 CE) . The work explains the legal hadiths gathered in Umdat al-Ahkam by Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi (d. 600 AH), combining hadith analysis with Hanbali jurisprudence .

Title and Authorship

The author explicitly named the work Kashf al-Litham Sharh Umdat al-Ahkam in his introduction and in his personal index (Thabat) . This title was likewise adopted by his student Kamal al-Din al-Ghazzi in al-Na't al-Akmal, al-Muradi in Silk al-Durar, Abd al-Hayy al-Kattani in Fihris al-Faharis, and Isma'il Pasha al-Baghdadi in Hadiyyat al-Arifin . On the title page of the manuscript copy held in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus, the title appears with an expanded rhyming title as Kashf al-Litham wa-Rashf al-Mudam Sharh Umdat al-Ahkam .

Content and Method

The work serves as an extensive commentary on the prophetic traditions of legal rulings (ahadith al-ahkam) . It is noted as the first commentary on Umdat al-Ahkam to focus systematically on Hanbali jurisprudence and to draw extensively upon the legal determinations of verifiers such as Ibn Taymiyya, Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, Ibn Daqiq al-Id, and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani .

In structuring his commentary, al-Safarini addresses several dimensions of each tradition:

  • Hadith and Legal Rulings: Deducing jurisprudential rulings (ahkam fiqhiyya) and legal etiquettes (adab shar'iyya) from the prophetic texts and early reports (athar) .
  • Biographical and Historical Notes: Providing biographical entries and historical anecdotes concerning the Companions and narrators .
  • Language and Literature: Clarifying vocabulary, grammar, and literary nuances embedded within the texts .

Al-Safarini gathered material from over one hundred written sources directly, with the underlying referenced material extending to thousands of citations, and he generally attributed each quoted opinion to its respective author .

Publication

The book was edited and annotated by Nur al-Din Talib and published in a first edition in 1428 AH / 2007 CE through the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in Kuwait (Mosques Sector) in collaboration with Dar al-Nawadir .
