Kashf al-Khafa wa-Muzil al-Ilbas ‘amma Ishtahara min al-Ahadith ‘ala Alsinat al-Nas (Unveiling the Obscurity and Removing Confusion Regarding Hadiths Commonly Circulated Among People) is a reference work on popular and circulated hadiths by the Syrian hadith scholar Ismail ibn Muhammad al-Ajluni (d. 1162 AH / 1749 CE) .
Purpose and Scope
Al-Ajluni compiled the book to verify and classify the sayings, proverbs, and traditions widely repeated among both the general public and scholars, distinguishing authentic Prophetic traditions from weak, fabricated, or non-Prophetic statements . He noted that although previous scholars had authored works in this field, each contained unique benefits; he sought to synthesize these materials into a comprehensive reference for researchers and teachers . The work encompasses 3,281 numbered entries (recorded as approximately 3,200 reports in early print descriptions), examining their authenticity under the standards of jarh wa-ta'dil (hadith transmitter criticism), clarifying their status as sound, good, weak, or fabricated, and identifying non-Prophetic maxims (hikam) and scholars' statements that had been mistaken for hadith .
Sources and Methodology
The primary source and foundation of the compilation is al-Maqasid al-Hasanah by al-Sakhawi (d. 902 AH) . Al-Ajluni condensed al-Sakhawi's entries by removing extended chains of transmission (isnads) while preserving the Companions who narrated them and the primary compilers who recorded them . In addition, he integrated material from several other works:
- al-Durar al-Muntathirah fi al-Ahadith al-Mushtahirah by Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti
- al-La'ali al-Manthurah fi al-Ahadith al-Mashhurah (cited as attributed to Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani)
- Tamyiz al-Tayyib min al-Khabith by Ibn al-Dayba'
- Itqan ma Yahsun min al-Akhbar al-Da'irah 'ala al-Alsun by Najm al-Din al-Ghazzi
- Fabricated hadith literature by Ibn al-Jawzi, al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Saghani, and Mulla Ali al-Qari's al-Asrar al-Marfu'ah
Unlike some predecessors, such as al-Ghazzi, who utilized single-letter abbreviations for source works and authors, al-Ajluni opted to state collectors' names explicitly to avoid confusion . Alongside grading, he frequently provided commentary on linguistic meaning and cited parallel sound traditions that conveyed similar senses .
Structure and Content
The text is organized alphabetically by the first letter of each report in the manner of a dictionary, enabling straightforward lookup .
Al-Ajluni appended a comprehensive conclusion (khatimah) to the work. In this section, he addresses spurious book attributions, corrects common historical and geographical errors—such as claims regarding the tombs of Prophet Nuh in the Beqaa, Ubayy ibn Ka'b in Damascus, al-Husayn ibn Ali and Sayyida Nafisa in Cairo, and the legendary meeting of al-Shafi'i and Ahmad ibn Hanbal with Shayban al-Ra'i—and outlines general principles and criteria (dawabit) for recognizing fabricated reports .
Printed Editions
The work has been published in two volumes in several editions, including:
- An edition edited by Ahmad al-Qallash, published by Mu'assasat al-Risalah in Beirut .
- An edition edited by Yusuf ibn Mahmud al-Hajj Ahmad, published by Maktabat al-'Ilm al-Hadith in Damascus (1421 AH) .
