Juz’ yashtamil ‘ala thamaniyah wa-khamsin hadithan (A Part Containing Fifty-Eight Hadiths) is a short hadith compilation featuring the narrations of the long-lived transmitter Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Umar al-Kurdi (d. 720 AH / 1320 CE), extracted and organized by the hadith scholar Uthman ibn Balban al-Muqatili (d. 717 AH / 1317 CE) .

Origin and Scope

The work is titled in full Juz’ yashtamil ‘ala thamaniyah wa-khamsin hadithan wa-‘ala athar wa-‘ala maw‘izah (A Part Containing Fifty-Eight Hadiths, One Tradition, and One Admonition) . It was compiled by Uthman ibn Balban al-Muqatili to document a selection of elevated transmissions received through al-Hasan ibn Umar al-Kurdi .

The narrations trace back through al-Kurdi’s primary shaykh, Abu al-Munajja Abd Allah ibn Umar al-Baghdadi, known as Ibn al-Latti . Al-Kurdi attended readings before Ibn al-Latti in Damascus in Dhu al-Qi‘dah 633 AH when he was four years old, receiving both direct audition (sama‘) and broad transmission licenses (ijazah) for those reports .

Contents and Structure

The collection opens with the tradition concerning intentions narrated on the authority of Umar ibn al-Khattab: إنما الأعمال بالنية ("Actions are judged only by intentions") . In addition to prophetic reports on topics including moral virtues, legal rulings, and eschatological matters, the collection incorporates non-prophetic traditions and exhortations, such as an epistolary counsel sent by Ibrahim ibn Adham to Amr ibn al-Minhal al-Maqdisi .

Publication

The text was edited by Nabil Sa‘d al-Din Jarrar and published in a single volume by Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah in 1429 AH (2008 CE) as part of a series of transcribed hadith booklets (Silsilat al-Ajza' al-mansukha) .
