Juz Qiraat al-Nabi (Tract on the Readings of the Prophet) is a 3rd-century AH hadith-based monograph compiled by the Quran reciter and scholar Abu Umar al-Duri (d. 246 AH / 860 CE) documenting the specific Quranic variant readings transmitted on the authority of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .
Content and Structure
The tract arranges prophetic traditions with their chains of transmission (isnad) according to the sequence of the Quranic chapters (suwar) . It opens with narrations related to Surah al-Fatihah, such as the reading of verse 4: مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ (Master of the Day of Judgment), transmitted through chains going back to Said ibn al-Musayyab and al-Bara ibn Azib via al-Kisai, and reports describing how the Prophet paused between each verse of the opening chapter .
The collection proceeds through the Quran, including narrations regarding the recitation of amin after وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ and various other verses across different chapters, and concludes with a narration concerning Surah Quraysh transmitted from Asma bint Yazid through the author's son, Abu Jafar . The author's son, Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn Hafs al-Duri, transmitted numerous hadiths in this book from his father, which later scholars cited in works on narration of fathers from their sons .
Manuscript Tradition and Publication
A major surviving copy of the tract is preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (MS No. 1139) . The manuscript dates back to the 6th century AH and begins with a transmission read to the female scholar Fakhr al-Nisa Shuhdah bint Ahmad al-Abri in Dhu al-Hijjah 572 AH . The manuscript bears several historical audition records (sama'at) and reading certificates, including:
- A reading before Abd al-Rahman al-Maqdisi in Damascus in 621 AH .
- An audition in Baalbek before Abd al-Rahman al-Bali in 761 AH, as well as a reading before Abd al-Rahman ibn Yusuf al-Balabakki in the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus in 670 AH .
- Auditions before Nasir al-Din Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Shafii at the al-Muzaffari Mosque on Mount Qasiyun in 707 AH, and readings by Yusuf ibn al-Zaki in 736 AH .
- Auditions and readings recorded by the Hanbali scholar Ibn Abd al-Hadi before Ibn Muflih in 869 AH and again in 897 AH .
- An endowment note (waqf) registered by Baha al-Din Abd al-Rahman dedicating the copy to the Diya'iyyah Hadith School (Dar al-Hadith al-Diya'iyyah) at the foot of Mount Qasiyun .
Microfilm reproductions of the manuscript are housed at the Islamic University of Madinah, the Central Library in Riyadh, and the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts in Cairo . The text was edited by Hikmat Bashir Yasin and published in a single volume by Maktabat al-Dar in Medina in 1408 AH / 1988 CE .
