Juz' Muhammad ibn 'Asim al-Thaqafi is a hadith monograph (juz') compiled by the Isfahan-based hadith transmitter Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn 'Asim al-Thaqafi (d. 262 AH / 875–876 CE) .
Scope and Contents
The work brings together hadith narrations transmitted by Muhammad ibn 'Asim from his principal authorities . Among the teachers whose transmissions feature in his collection are Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah, Yahya ibn Adam, Husayn ibn 'Ali al-Ju'fi, Abu Usamah Hammad ibn Usamah, 'Abdah ibn Sulayman, Muhammad ibn Bishr al-'Abdi, Zayd ibn al-Hubab, and Abu Yahya al-Himmani .
Transmission and Reception
The collection was narrated directly from Muhammad ibn 'Asim by his students, notably 'Abd Allah ibn Ja'far ibn Ahmad ibn Faris, who was the last surviving narrator of his circle, as well as Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Mandah, Ahmad ibn 'Ali ibn al-Jarud, and Muhammad ibn 'Umar ibn Hafs al-Jurjiri . From 'Abd Allah ibn Ja'far, the work entered the transmission lineages of major scholars in Isfahan, being preserved by Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani and subsequently transmitted by Abu 'Ali al-Haddad .
Later hadith authorities documented their receipt of the text through unbroken chains of audition (isnad); al-Dhahabi explicitly recorded hearing the juz' with a continuous transmission, and Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani included his own chain of transmission back to the author in his catalog al-Mu'jam al-Mufahras .
Manuscripts and Publication
Manuscripts of the text have been preserved in historical collections, including the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus and the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies in Riyadh . The monograph was edited by Mufid Khalid 'Iyd and published in a single volume alongside Juz' Ahmad ibn 'Isam by Dar al-'Asimah in Riyadh in 1409 AH (1988–1989 CE) .
