Juz' min Hadith al-Na'ali (Arabic: جزء من حديث النعالي, lit. 'A Part from the Hadith of al-Na'ali'), also known as Juz' fihi min Hadith Abi al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Talhah al-Na'ali 'an Shuyukhih, is a short hadith compilation by the Baghdadi traditionist Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Talhah al-Na'ali (d. 413 AH / 1022 CE) containing prophetic traditions transmitted from his various teachers .
Author and Background
The compiler, Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Talhah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Uthman al-Na'ali, was a hadith transmitter based in Baghdad whose nisba derives from the making and selling of shoes (ni'āl) . Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi recorded hadith from him and noted that he was continuously engaged in writing hadith until his death, though he characterized him as having sought out anomalous and uncorroborated reports (gharāʾib wa manākīr) and described him as adhering to Rafidism . Abu al-Qasim al-Azhari also reported witnessing al-Na'ali curse Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan . Al-Na'ali died on Sunday, 7 Rabi' al-Awwal 413 AH .
Contents and Transmission
The work is organized as a single-volume hadith part (juz'), presenting traditions with complete chains of transmission connecting al-Na'ali to the Prophet ﷺ through various senior scholars . The narrated topics encompass fundamental legal and ethical subjects, including the primacy of intention in actions, purification, prayer, the merits of fasting and Ramadan, manners of companionship, and legal rulings .
Among the prominent teachers whose transmissions al-Na'ali compiled in the work are:
- Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Ibrahim al-Shafi'i
- Abu 'Amr 'Uthman ibn Muhammad ibn Bishr ibn Sanqah al-Wasiti
- Abu al-Qasim Habib ibn al-Hasan al-Qazzaz
- Abu Muhammad 'Abd al-Khaliq ibn al-Hasan ibn Abi Rubah al-Mu'addil
- Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn 'Umar ibn Ji'abi al-Hafiz
- Abu Bahr Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Kawthar al-Barbahari
- Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ja'far ibn Malik al-Qati'i
- Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn Babawayh al-Qummi
The transmission of the text was preserved through the compiler's grandson, Abu 'Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Talhah al-Na'ali (d. 493 AH) . Al-Husayn heard the compilation read directly to his grandfather in the central mosque of Baghdad (Jami' al-Madinah) in Rabi' al-Awwal 411 AH, and he subsequently transmitted it to later students, including during an audition session on Wednesday, 9 Rabi' al-Awwal 490 AH . The text passed through prominent hadith lineages—such as those recorded by Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani in his bibliographical register al-Mu'jam al-mufahras under the title Juz' al-Ni'al—and manuscript copies have been preserved in the Zahiriyyah Library collections in Damascus .
