Juz min Hadith Abi Bakr al-Najjad (Hadith Part of Abu Bakr al-Najjad) is a specialized hadith tract (juz') transmitted from the Iraqi jurist and traditionist Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Sulayman al-Najjad (d. 348 AH / 960 CE) containing a selection of elevated-chain narrations and traditions heard from his shaykhs .

Transmission and Manuscript

The work represents a transmission (riwayah) preserved primarily through Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn Shadhan al-Bazzaz, who read it back to Abu Bakr al-Najjad in Rabi' al-Akhir 344 AH . It was subsequently read and transmitted by Abu al-Ma'ali Thabit ibn Bundar al-Baqqal on Friday, 6 Sha'ban 424 AH, and related from him by his son Abu al-Qasim Yahya ibn Thabit .

A surviving manuscript copy of this transmission is preserved within the 'Umariyyah collections (al-Majami' al-'Umariyyah) at the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (under collection no. 31, MS no. 15, folios 208–215) .

Contents and Scope

The collection opens with a report narrated by al-Bara' ibn 'Azib describing the Prophet ﷺ during the Battle of the Trench transporting earth while chanting the poetic lines of 'Abd Allah ibn Rawahah: اللَّهُمَّ لَوْلا أَنْتَ مَا اهْتَدَيْنَا ... وَلا تَصَدَّقْنَا وَلا صَلَّيْنَا ... فَأَنْزِلَنَّ سَكِينَةً عَلَيْنَا ... وَثَبِّتِ الأَقْدَامَ إِنْ لاقَيْنَا ... إِنَّ الأُلَى قَدْ بَغَوْا عَلَيْنَا ... وإِنْ أَرَادُوا فِتْنَةً أَبَيْنَا ("O Allah, were it not for You we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed; so send down tranquility upon us, and make our feet firm when we meet [the enemy]...") .

The text compiles narrations received by al-Najjad from several of his teachers, including al-Hasan ibn Mukram, Yahya ibn Ja'far, Hilal ibn al-'Ala', Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn 'Isa, Ahmad ibn al-Khalil, 'Abd al-Malik ibn Muhammad, and al-Harith ibn Muhammad .

The narrations span diverse legal, ethical, and doctrinal themes, such as:

  • Rulings regarding usury (riba) and spot transactions in gold .
  • The expedition of Usamah ibn Zayd to al-Huraqah and the sanctity of the declaration of faith (la ilaha illa Allah) .
  • Legal obligations concerning congregational prayer and exemptions for the blind .
  • Eschatological descriptions of the departure of the righteous, civil strife (fitan), and the seventy thousand believers entering Paradise without reckoning .
  • Supplications during bowing (ruku') and prostration (sujud), as well as exhortations toward generosity, discernment, and valor .
