Juz' min Hadith Abi Ali al-Sawwaf (Part from the Hadith of Abu Ali al-Sawwaf) is a hadith collection transmitted from the Baghdadi traditionist Abu Ali Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Sawwaf (270–359 AH / 883–970 CE) .
Transmission and Content
The text comprises prophetic traditions and reports related by Ibn al-Sawwaf on the authority of several leading hadith authorities of his era, including Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ali ibn al-Qasim al-Dabbi, Muhammad ibn Salih ibn Dhurayh, Umar ibn Ayyub al-Saqati, and Bishr ibn Musa al-Asadi . The narrated traditions predominantly address themes of mutual assistance, kindness, relieving distress, and concealing the faults of fellow believers, such as the prophetic directive: لا يستر عبد عبدا في الدنيا إلا ستره الله يوم القيامة ("No servant conceals the faults of another servant in this world except that God conceals him on the Day of Resurrection") .
In the transmission recorded by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, the work begins with the hadith of Uqba ibn Amir concerning concealing someone's faults ( من رأى عورة ) and concludes with the phrase: "and with him was Abu Bakr" ( ومعه أبو بكر ) . The principal line of transmission preserved in the surviving manuscripts traces through Ibn al-Sawwaf's student Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Baqi ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Zakariyya, through whom it was transmitted by Abu Ghalib Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Baqillani and Abu Yasir Tahir ibn Asad al-Tabbakh to Abu Tahir al-Silafi . Ibn Hajar received this transmission via an isnad passing from al-Silafi to Abu Muhammad ibn Rawaj, Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahim ibn al-Nashw, and Fatima bint Muhammad ibn al-Manja .
Related Parts and Manuscripts
In addition to this individual juz', historical sources record a second and a third part (al-Thani and al-Thalith) from Ibn al-Sawwaf's narrations transmitted along different chains of transmission . The traditionist al-Daraqutni also made an independent selection (intikhab) of traditions from Ibn al-Sawwaf's repertoire, transmitted through figures such as Abu Tahir Abd al-Ghaffar ibn Muhammad al-Sawwaf and Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani .
Copies of the text are preserved at the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (within collective volumes Majmu' 10 and 106), as well as on microfilm at the Islamic University of Madinah (no. 488) .
