Juz min Ahadith Abi Bakr al-Suli (Arabic: جزء من أحاديث أبي بكر الصولي, lit. 'Part from the Hadiths of Abu Bakr al-Suli') is a hadith and historical reports booklet (juz') preserving narrations and anecdotes transmitted by the Baghdadi scholar, courtier, and historian Abu Bakr al-Suli (d. 335 AH / 946 CE).
Author and Content
Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn al-'Abbas ibn Muhammad ibn Sul al-Suli al-Baghdadi (d. 335 AH / 946 CE; another report gives 336 AH) was an authority on belles-lettres, historical reports (akhbar), poetry, and royal chronicles, and served as a court companion (nadim) to several Abbasid caliphs. In hadith and historical transmissions, he narrated from figures such as Abu Dawud al-Sijistani, al-Mubarrad, Tha'lab, Abu al-'Ayna' Muhammad ibn al-Qasim, and Muhammad ibn Yunus al-Kudaymi.
The booklet brings together prophetic traditions, historical narratives, and literary reports that al-Suli transmitted with his chains of narration (isnads).
Transmission and Reception
A number of prominent scholars transmitted al-Suli's hadiths and dictations, including al-Daraqutni, Abu 'Umar ibn Hayyawayh, Abu Bakr ibn Shadhan, Abu al-Hasan ibn al-Jundi, and Abu al-Husayn ibn Jumi'. Al-Sam'ani recorded writing down two large parts from al-Suli's dictations (amali) through his teachers, and al-Dhahabi stated that he had heard a part of al-Suli's narrations. Al-Dhahabi also noted that al-Suli's hadith was transmitted with elevated chains (bi-'uluww) among the students of Abu Tahir al-Silafi.
Publication
The work was edited by Khallaf Mahmud 'Abd al-Sami' and published by Dar al-Kutub al-'Ilmiyyah in Beirut (1st ed., 1423 AH / 2002 CE), printed within a compilation of hadith tracts under the title al-Fawa'id li-'Abd al-Wahhab ibn Mandah. It has also been edited and published within collections under the title Ahadith wa-Akhbar 'an Abi Bakr al-Suli.
