Juz' Luwayn (Arabic: جزء لوين, The Hadith Part of Luwayn), also known as Hadith Luwayn or Juz' fihi min Hadith Luwayn, is a classical hadith monograph (juz') preserving narrations transmitted by the centenarian hadith master Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn Habib al-Asadi al-Massisi, known by the moniker Luwayn (d. 245 or 246 AH / 859 or 860 CE) .

Author and Context

The author, Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Asadi, originated from Kufa and lived in Baghdad before taking up residence on the northern frontier in al-Massisah and later Adana . Living to approximately 113 years of age, he began transmitting hadith late in life and outlived almost all contemporaries of his tier . His longevity allowed later scholars to receive through him early, elevated chains of transmission ('uluww al-isnad) leading directly to prominent second-century authorities, including Malik ibn Anas, Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah, Hammad ibn Zayd, Sulayman ibn Bilal, Hudayj ibn Mu'awiyah, and Abu 'Awanah .

Transmission and Content

The work consists of prophetic hadiths and traditions recorded from Luwayn’s teachers . It circulated widely among subsequent hadith transmitters through several primary transmission lines :

  • The transmission of Abu Muhammad Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'id (Ibn Sa'id), which was conveyed via Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis to Abu Mansur al-'Attar, as well as via Ibn Zanbur to Abu Nasr al-Zaynabi .
  • The transmission of Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Hazuwwari, related through Abu Ja'far Ibn al-Marzuban al-Abhari to Abu Bakr Ibn Majah al-Abhari .
  • The transmission preserved through the recension of Abu al-Fath Hilal al-Haffar .

Other students who narrated Luwayn's material include Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, 'Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi, and Abu Bakr ibn Abi Dawud .

Reception and Preservation

Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi described Luwayn as "the author of the famous juz' that is transmitted today with high isnads" . The book was also recorded in biographical and bibliographical repertories such as Haji Khalifa's Kashf al-Zunun .

Multiple manuscript copies of the compilation have survived in collections including the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus, the Al-Azhar Library in Cairo, and the King Faisal Center in Riyadh . It was published in a critical edition edited by Abu Bilal Ghunaym ibn 'Abbas (Riyadh: Maktabat al-Rushd, 1419 AH / 1998 CE) under the title Juz' fihi min Hadith Luwayn .
