Juz Ibn al-Jallabi (Arabic: جزء ابن الجلابي) is a short hadith tract (juzʾ) compiled by the Iraqi judge and traditionist Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Jallabi (d. 542 AH / 1147 CE) .

Author and Background

The author was Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Tayyib al-Jullabi (or Ibn al-Jallabi) al-Wasiti . His father, Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Jullabi (d. 483 AH), was a trustworthy traditionist and author of the continuation (dhayl) to the history of Wasit by Bahshal . Abu Abd Allah transmitted hadith from prominent scholars, including Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Makhlad, Ismail ibn Muhammad ibn Kumari, al-Humaydi, Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Ghandajani, and Abu Mansur Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Nadim al-Ukbari . As noted by Ibn Nuqta, he possessed sound transmission records (sahih al-samaʿ), and a group of scholars from Baghdad and Wasit related hadith from him prior to his death in Ramadan 542 AH .

Content and Transmission

The collection preserves narrations transmitted by Ibn al-Jallabi through his teachers . It opens with a narration he heard from Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Makhlad al-Azdi in Muharram 464 AH, reporting the statement of Umar ibn al-Khattab upon kissing the Black Stone: «إِنِّي لأُقَبِّلُكَ وَإِنِّي لأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ لا تَضُرُّ وَلا تَنْفَعُ، وَلَوْلا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُقَبِّلُكَ مَا فعلت» ("I kiss you while knowing that you are a stone that neither harms nor benefits, and had I not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kiss you, I would not have done so") .

The work was recorded in later bibliographical compilations of transmitted texts, including the Muʿjam al-Mufahras of Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Anshab al-Kathab fi Ansab al-Kutub by Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, both identifying the part by its opening hadith concerning Umar's veneration of the Black Stone . Its chains of transmission passed through figures such as Umar ibn Yahya ibn Shafiʿ, Ibn Qudamah, and al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn Hubal .

Modern Publication

The text was edited by Abu Abd al-Rahman Ibn Aqil al-Zahiri and initially published in the journal ʿAlam al-Kutub in Rajab 1405 AH (April 1985 CE) . It was subsequently issued as an independent booklet in Riyadh by Dar Ibn Hazm in 1416 AH (1996 CE) as part of a series dedicated to edited hadith tracts (Silsilat al-Ajzaʾ al-Muhaqqaqa) .
