Juz’ fihi thalathat ahadith musalsala (Tract Containing Three Chain-Linked Hadiths) is a concise hadith booklet consisting of three narrations transmitted through continuous, unbroken chains of specific transmission conditions (musalsal) .
Attribution and Transmission
The compilation brings together narrations transmitted through the scholars Abu Tahir al-Silafi (d. 576 AH / 1180 CE) and the judge Abu al-Fadl Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Hadrami . Both lines of transmission converge at their student, the Shafi'i scholar and hadith specialist Radi al-Din Murtada ibn Abi al-Jud Hatim ibn Salama al-Maqdisi (d. 634 AH / 1236–1237 CE) .
While sometimes cataloged among the works of al-Silafi, researchers have noted that only the first hadith derives from al-Silafi's transmission, whereas the second and third are from Abu al-Fadl al-Hadrami; thus the overall compilation is primarily attributable to al-Murtada ibn Abi al-Jud . The tract was audited from al-Murtada in Egypt by Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Qudama al-Maqdisi on Saturday, 11 Dhu al-Hijjah 626 AH .
Contents
The tract contains three chain-linked narrations (ahadith musalsala):
- The First Hadith of Mercy: Transmitted through Abu Tahir al-Silafi in Alexandria, who received it from Abu Muhammad Ja'far ibn Ahmad ibn al-Husayn ibn al-Sarraj al-Lughawi, tracing back to Sufyan ibn 'Uyayna from 'Amr ibn Dinar, from Abu Qabus, from Abd Allah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As . The narration is chain-linked by primacy (al-musalsal bi-l-awwaliyya), as each transmitter states that it was the very first hadith he heard from his teacher . The Prophet ﷺ stated: الرَّاحِمُونَ يَرْحَمُهُمُ الرَّحْمَنُ، ارْحَمُوا أَهْلَ الأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ ("The merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful; show mercy to the people of the earth, and the One in heaven will show mercy to you") . Al-Silafi also notes an anecdote where Ibn al-Sarraj met the Egyptian hafiz Abu Ishaq al-Habbal, who exchanged the same hadith with him .
- The Second Hadith of Mercy: Transmitted through Abu al-Fadl Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Hadrami in Alexandria, from Abu al-Qasim Sa'd ibn Ali al-Isfarayini, back to Sufyan ibn 'Uyayna and Abd Allah ibn 'Amr . Like the first, it is chain-linked by primacy (al-musalsal bi-l-awwaliyya), with the wording: الرَّاحِمُونَ يَرْحَمُهُمُ الرَّحْمَنُ، ارْحَمُوا مَنْ فِي الأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ ("The merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful; show mercy to whoever is on the earth, and the One in heaven will show mercy to you") .
- The Hadith on Sincerity (Ikhlas): Transmitted from Abu al-Fadl al-Hadrami through a chain that includes Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, al-Hasan al-Basri, and Hudhayfa, who asked the Prophet ﷺ . The transmission is chain-linked by the question: each narrator asks his teacher, "What is sincerity?" (musalsal 'ala shart al-su'al 'an al-ikhlas ma huwa?), leading up to the Prophet ﷺ asking the Angel Gabriel, who asked God, to which God stated: هُوَ سِرٌّ مِنْ سِرِّي اسْتَوْدَعْتُهُ قَلْبَ مَنْ أَحْبَبْتُ مِنْ عِبَادِي ("It is a secret of My secrets that I have entrusted to the heart of whomever I love among My servants") .
Preservation
A manuscript copy of the tract is preserved in the collections of the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus under the name of Radi al-Din Murtada ibn Abi al-Jud al-Shafi'i (Majami' no. 98) .
