Juz' fihi min al-Akhbar wal-Hikayat min Kalam al-Ulama (A Part Containing Reports, Anecdotes, and the Sayings of Scholars) is a short hadith tract (juz') compiled by the Kufan hadith scholar Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Sulayman al-Hadrami, known as Mutayyin (d. 297 AH / 909–910 CE) .

Transmission and Contents

The work gathers historical reports, narrative anecdotes, and sayings of early scholars transmitted through Mutayyin's chains of narration (isnads) . The text contains 74 isnads and was transmitted directly from Mutayyin by the Baghdadi traditionist and Sufi Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Khuldi (d. 348 AH) .

Although Mutayyin authored major works in hadith, history, and Quranic exegesis—including a Musnad, a Tarikh, and a Tafsir—none of his extensive writings are known to have survived aside from this tract and a companion 42-isnad collection entitled Juz' fihi min Hadith Abi Ja'far Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Sulayman al-Hadrami .

Subsequent transmission of the text passed from al-Khuldi to Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Rizqawayh, from whom it was received by authorization (ijazah) by Abu al-Fadl Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn Khayrun, and subsequently by Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi ibn Ahmad ibn Salman .

Manuscript and Publication

The text is preserved in a unique manuscript in the Chester Beatty Library (MS 3849) . The manuscript consists of six folios written in Naskh script, containing 19 to 20 lines per page . The title page bears an inscription designating it as a perpetual endowment (waqf) for the Diya'iyyah library (Dar al-Hadith al-Diya'iyyah) in Damascus . The manuscript's colophon records an audition note indicating that it was read before Ibn al-Akhdar (Abu Muhammad Abd al-Aziz ibn al-Akhdar) in 597 AH . The tract was edited and published by Khalid Abd al-Azim al-Huwayni alongside Mutayyin's other surviving hadith part .
