Juz' 'Ali ibn Muhammad al-Himyari is a hadith tract (juz') preserving the narrations of the Kufan jurist, traditionist, and judge Abu al-Hasan 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Harun al-Himyari (231–323 AH / 845–935 CE) .
Author and Content
The compiler of the narrations, 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Harun ibn Ziyad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Himyari, served as a judge in Kufa and was recognized as a trustworthy (thiqa) traditionist and jurist . Although he reportedly lost most of his written books during his lifetime, he retained most of his hadith corpus in memory . Al-Himyari was distinguished as the last surviving narrator to transmit directly from Abu Kurayb Muhammad ibn al-'Ala', and he also related hadith from teachers such as Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj and Harun ibn Ishaq .
He visited Baghdad and transmitted hadith there . His students included Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Warraq, Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hammad, Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Kindi al-Tahhan, and Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah al-Ju'fi al-Harawani (known as Ibn al-Harawani), who was the last of his companions .
Transmission and Publication
The tract survived through the chain of transmission of al-Himyari's student Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah al-Ju'fi al-Harawani; the historian and traditionist al-Dhahabi noted in Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' that a juz' of al-Himyari's hadith reached him through this transmission .
The work was edited by 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Sulayman ibn Ibrahim al-Bu'aymi and published by Maktabat al-Rushd in Riyadh (1418 AH / 1998 CE) .
