Juz' al-Saqati (lit. 'The Hadith Part of al-Saqati') is a short Hadith monograph (juz') containing narrations transmitted by the Baghdadi traditionist Abu 'Amr al-Saqati (d. 362 AH / 973 CE) .
Title and Selection
The work is commonly cited by its shortened title, Juz' al-Saqati, appearing under this name in reading certificates (sama'at), as well as in bibliographical and indexing works such as Taqi al-Din al-Fasi's Dhayl al-Taqyid, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's al-Mu'jam al-Mufahras, Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti's Ansab al-Kutub, and Katip Celebi's Kashf al-Zunun . On the manuscript title page, it appears as Juz'un fihi Ahadith Abi 'Amr 'Abd al-Malik ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Fadl al-Saqati, while Ibn Tulun records it in al-Fihrist al-Awsat as Juz' Abi 'Amr 'Abd al-Malik ibn al-Hasan al-Saqati .
According to Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi in his Thabat Masmu'at, the material in the monograph was selected (intikhab) by the Baghdadi traditionist Abu Hafs 'Umar ibn Ja'far ibn Abi al-Sari al-Warraq (d. 357 AH) . Another report notes that al-Daraqutni also made selections from Abu 'Amr al-Saqati's narrations .
Transmission and Content
The core line of transmission of the monograph stems from Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani, who heard it directly from Abu 'Amr al-Saqati . The text passed from Abu Nu'aym to Abu 'Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Haddad (d. 515 AH), then to Abu al-Hasan Mas'ud ibn Abi Mansur al-Jammal (d. 595 AH), and to Abu al-Hajjaj Yusuf ibn Khalil al-Dimashqi (d. 648 AH), through whom it was transmitted by scholars such as the brothers Abu Bakr Ahmad and 'Abd al-Rahim, sons of Muhammad ibn al-'Ajami, reaching later authorities including al-Suyuti and Ibn Hajar .
The collection features Hadith reports transmitted by al-Saqati from various teachers, notably Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah al-Basri and Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Nasr al-Sa'igh . The narrated topics include:
- Descriptions of the afterlife, such as the parable of a person's three companions (wealth, family, and deeds) .
- Ethical and theological exhortations, including the warning against trivialized sins (muhaqqarat al-dhunub) .
- Ritual practices and legal rulings, such as the virtue of voluntary prayer at home, the opening sermon (khutbat al-hajah), and supplication (du'a) .
Manuscripts and Publication
A manuscript of the work is preserved in a composite manuscript volume (majmu') at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University (folios 58–65) . The text was edited by Nabil Sa'd al-Din Jarrar and published in 1440 AH / 2019 CE as part of the compilation Majmu' fihi Musannafat Tirad al-Zaynabi wa-Ajza' Hadithiyya Ukhra .
