Juz al-Jurkani (Juzʾ al-Jarkānī) is a collection of prophetic narrations assembled by the traditionist Abu al-Raja al-Jarkani (d. c. 514 AH / 1120–1121 CE) .

Author and Context

The compiler, Abu al-Raja Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Jarkani, was an active hadith collector and the resident traditionist (mufīd) of Isfahan during his era . He was associated with Jarkan, a village situated in the outskirts of Isfahan . Al-Jarkani heard traditions from prominent regional authorities, including Abu Tahir Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahim al-Katib, Abu al-Fath Mansur ibn al-Husayn al-Katib, Abu al-Fadl Abd al-Rahman ibn Ahmad al-Razi, Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Fadl al-Batriqani, and Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Rida . His narrations were widely transmitted, and he granted general certificates of transmission (ijāzāt) to subsequent scholars such as Abu Tahir al-Silafi, Abu Saʿd al-Samʿani (in 508 AH), and Ibn Asakir .

Content and Transmission

The compilation belongs to the genre of single-volume hadith tracts (ajzāʾ). Bibliographical and transmission records establish its beginning and ending texts:

  • Opening text: The collection opens with the tradition transmitted from Abu Hurayra: كلمتان خفيفتان على اللسان ("Two phrases are light on the tongue...") .
  • Closing text: It concludes with the prophetic report that ends with the phrase: قبل طلوع الشمس وقبل غروبها ("...before the rising of the sun and before its setting") .

The text was transmitted directly from al-Jarkani by Abu Tahir al-Silafi . It passed from al-Silafi to his grandson Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Makki, through whom it reached later teachers such as Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn al-Radi and Zaynab bint al-Kamal . Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani recorded his chain of transmission for the tract in his bibliographical indexes Al-Majmaʿ al-Muʾassas and Al-Muʿjam al-Mufahras, having read it to al-Imad Abu Bakr ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Izz al-Faradi via that line . It was also documented by al-Suyuti in his index of book attributions, Inshāb al-Kuthub fī Ansāb al-Kutub .
