Juz al-Hasan ibn Shadhan (The Hadith Part of al-Hasan ibn Shadhan) is a hadith tract containing transmissions narrated by the Baghdadi traditionist Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn Shadhan (339–425 AH / 950–1034 CE) from his teachers .

Selection and Content

The text forms part of the hadith parts (ajza') transmitting selected traditions from Ibn Shadhan's extensive auditory records, compiled through selections (intiqa') made by traditionists such as Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Aziz ibn Ali al-Azji . Ibn Shadhan heard hadith from a large cohort of fourth-century traditionists, including Abu Amr ibn al-Sammak, Abu Sahl ibn Ziyad, Ahmad ibn Salman al-Najjar, Ja'far al-Khuldi, and Mukram ibn Ahmad al-Bazzaz . The tract comprises discrete chains of transmission and prophetic narrations, reflecting both elevated chains (al-asaneed al-'awali) and rare transmissions (ghara'ib) narrated through his shaykhs .

In addition to this hadith part, Ibn Shadhan's transmitted materials were circulated in two teacher compendia: Mashyakhat Ibn Shadhan al-Kubra, which was organized into two parts, and al-Mashyakha al-Sughra .

Transmission and Preservation

The transmission of Ibn Shadhan's hadith part was carried forward by several of his direct students, notably Abu Ghalib Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Baqillani, Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Tikaki, and Abu al-Fadl Muhammad ibn Abd al-Salam al-Ansari . Later scholars who received and transmitted these parts through their chains include Abu Tahir al-Silafi, Abu al-Husayn Abd al-Haqq ibn Abd al-Khaliq, and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani .

Manuscript copies of various parts of Ibn Shadhan's hadith narrations have survived in composite codices within the Zahiriyya collection in Damascus, including holdings from the Umariyya library .
