Author and Context

The author, Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Rashiq al-Mu'addil al-Askari, was born in Egypt on the morning of Monday, 4 Safar 283 AH (with another source giving his birth year as 282 AH) . He was affiliated with 'Askar Misr and became the leading traditionist of Egypt in his era, transmitting hadith from prominent scholars including al-Nasa'i, Ahmad ibn Hammad al-Utaki, and Yamut ibn al-Muzarra' . He died in Jumada al-Ula (or Jumada al-Akhira) 370 AH at eighty-seven years of age .

Contents and Transmission

The work is an audition text preserving selected traditions extracted from Ibn Rashiq’s dictation sessions . In some manuscript copies and bibliographical registers, the work was also designated as Juzʾ min Fawāʾid Ibn Rashīq or identified as the nineteenth part (al-juzʾ al-tāsiʿ ʿashar) of Ibn Rashiq’s hadiths .

The text was read back to Ibn Rashiq in Shawwal 365 AH by Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Naysaburi . Transmission paths downstream from al-Naysaburi include:

  • A transmission through Abu Sadiq Murshid ibn Yahya al-Madini and Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Razi, and from both in writing to Abu Tahir Barakat ibn Ibrahim al-Qurashi .
  • A transmission through Sahl ibn Bishr al-Isfarayini to Abu Ya'la Hamza ibn Asad, as recorded in later transmission certificates by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Yusuf ibn Khalil al-Dimashqi .

The compilation begins with a narration transmitted through al-Nasa'i from Ubayd Allah ibn Sa'd from Ali ibn Abi Talib, recounting the Prophet ﷺ visiting him and Fatima at night to awaken them for prayer ( دخل عليّ رسول الله ﷺ وعلى فاطمة فأيقظنا للصلاة ) .

Preservation and Printings

Manuscript copies of the juzʾ are preserved in historical collections, including the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus and the Central Library in Mecca . The text has been edited by Jasim ibn Muhammad ibn Hammud al-Zamil and published within a volume of three hadith booklets (thalāthat ajzāʾ ḥadīthiyya) by Maktabat Ahl al-Athar and Dar Ghiras .
