Juz al-Baghawi (Arabic: جزء البغوي, lit. 'The Hadith Tract of al-Baghawi') is a collection of hadiths transmitted by the hadith scholar and historian Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi (d. 317 AH / 929 CE) .

Content and Transmission

The work exists in several transmissions and compilations originating from al-Baghawi's narrations:

  • One major transmission is preserved through his student Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis (Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman, d. 393 AH) and was later transmitted by Abu Tahir al-Silafi .
  • Another compilation, known as Thalathah wa-Thalathun Hadithan min Hadith Abi al-Qasim al-Baghawi ("Thirty-Three Hadiths from the Hadiths of Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi"), was assembled by Abu Talib Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Fath al-Harbi, known as Ibn al-Ushari (d. 451 AH) . In this compilation, Ibn al-Ushari recorded thirty-three hadiths from thirty-three of his own teachers who had heard them directly from al-Baghawi, selecting one hadith from each teacher .
  • A combined transmission alongside narrations of Harami ibn Abi al-Ala was transmitted through Abu al-Qasim Ibn Hubaba (Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad) from al-Baghawi . In this version, al-Baghawi's part opens with a hadith from Ibn Abbas regarding verbal abuse and concludes with the hadith: الصوم نصف الصبر ("Fasting is half of patience") .

Manuscripts of the text and its selections are preserved in multiple collections, including the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (under collections no. 51, 68, and 118) and the Feyzullah Efendi collection .
