Juz Abu al-Jahm (Juzʾ Abī al-Jahm) is a concise hadith booklet (juzʾ) compiled by the Baghdadi traditionist al-Ala ibn Musa al-Bahili (d. 228 AH / 843 CE) . It is particularly renowned among later traditionists for preserving elevated chains of transmission (ʿulūw al-isnād) .
Transmission and Reception
The compilation was transmitted primarily through the hadith scholar Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi (d. 317 AH), who received it by dictation from al-Ala ibn Musa's original written book . Through al-Baghawi, the work passed down through a prominent line of transmitters, including Abu Muhammad Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Shurayh al-Ansari, Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Abi Mas'ud al-Farisi, and Abu al-Waqt al-Sijzi .
Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi noted that he heard the text through more than sixty authorities who received it from the students of Abu al-Waqt, pointing out that Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abi Talib al-Salihy (known as Ibn al-Shahnah) was the last surviving transmitter in the world with direct audition of that chain, living ninety-seven years after receiving it . The text also represented the highest-reaching auditory chain of transmission received by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in his hadith studies . While al-Khatib al-Baghdadi declared al-Ala ibn Musa to be truthful (ṣadūq), later scholars noted that the compilation contains several objectionable reports (manākīr) transmitted through the weak narrator Sawwar ibn Mus'ab al-Hamdani .
Contents
The collection consists of prophetic hadiths and companion traditions narrated by Abu al-Jahm from his teachers, most prominent of whom was the Egyptian scholar Layth ibn Sa'd, as well as Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, Sawwar ibn Mus'ab, Abd al-Quddus, and al-Haytham ibn Adi . Among its narrations from Layth ibn Sa'd via Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir ibn Abd Allah is the hadith stating that none of those who gave the pledge under the tree shall enter the Fire . It also includes the narration: خَيْرُ مَا رُكِبَتْ إِلَيْهِ الرَّوَاحِلُ مَسْجِدِي هَذَا، وَالْبَيْتُ الْعَتِيقُ ("The best destinations to which mounts are ridden are this mosque of mine and the Ancient House"), which al-Tabarani stated was transmitted from Layth exclusively by al-Ala ibn Musa .
The text also contains numerous traditions transmitted through Layth from Nafi' from Abd Allah ibn Umar covering various legal and ethical matters, such as the etiquette of prayer during rain or on journeys, the prohibition of two people conversing privately to the exclusion of a third, and rulings on vows, fasting, and manumission .
Publication
The work was edited by Abd al-Rahim ibn Muhammad al-Qashqari and published by Maktabat al-Rushd in Riyadh .
