Juz Abu al-Abbas al-Ismi (also vocalized as Juz' Abi al-Abbas al-Asimi) is a hadith monograph compiled by the traditionist Abu al-Abbas Rafi ibn Ism ibn al-Abbas al-Asimi al-Dabbi al-Harawi (d. 405 AH / 1014–1015 CE) .

Author and Transmission

The author, Abu al-Abbas Rafi ibn 'Usm (or Ism) ibn al-Abbas al-Dabbi, was from Herat and was noted by al-Dhahabi as its civic chief (ra'is Hirat) . He transmitted hadith from his father, Abu Bakr al-Ziyadi, and Abu al-Hasan Musa ibn Isa al-Dinawari . Those who narrated from him include al-Hakim al-Naysaburi, Abu Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Asbahani, and Najib ibn Maymun, who was the last person to transmit from him .

Contents and Method

The work is a hadith part (juz') containing prophetic traditions transmitted with their chains of narration (asānīd) across various topics . Throughout the compilation, the author appends critical remarks examining transmission defects (ʿilal) and peculiarities. He frequently identifies solitary or rare lines of transmission (gharīb), points out narrator isolation (tafarrud), corrects errors in transmitter identities, and assesses whether a text is properly established as an attributed prophetic statement (marfūʿ) or stopped at a Companion (mawqūf) . He also engages in source critique by evaluating competing pathways transmitted from central traditionists such as al-Zuhri, Qatadah, and Abu al-Zubayr .

Publication

The work was edited by Jasim ibn Muhammad ibn Hammud al-Fujji and published by Maktabat Ahl al-Athar in a second edition in 2005 .
