Jumal Futuh al-Islam baʿd Rasul Allah (Compendium of the Conquests of Islam After the Messenger of God ﷺ) is a concise historical treatise on the early Islamic conquests composed by the Andalusian scholar Ibn Hazm (384–456 AH / 994–1064 CE) .

Scope and Content

The treatise provides a compact summary of the military campaigns and territorial conquests undertaken by the Muslim community following the death of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . It opens with the immediate aftermath of the Prophet's death and the outbreak of the apostasy movements (the Ridda wars), recording the steadfastness of the inhabitants of Mecca, al-Ta'if, and parts of Yemen, while other Arab tribes either renounced Islam or refused to pay zakat . It details Caliph Abu Bakr's dispatch of the expedition led by Usama ibn Zayd toward the Levant, the military forces sent to overcome the apostates, and the confrontations with claimants to prophecy such as al-Aswad al-ʿAnsi, Tulayha al-Asadi, and Musaylima with Sajah .

Method and Sources

The work reflects Ibn Hazm's broader historical method, which focused on producing concentrated, accessible compendia and educational handbooks alongside works such as Jawamiʿ al-Sira and Nuqat al-ʿArus . In subject matter and presentation, the treatise closely mirrors classical works on conquests—serving virtually as an abridgment of works such as Futuh al-Buldan by al-Baladhuri and the Futuh al-Sham literature attributed to authors such as al-Waqidi and al-Azdi—while incorporating Ibn Hazm's own critical remarks and annotations . Modern scholars and editors note that the text was virtually unquoted and uncited by earlier classical historians .

Transmission and Publication

The text survived appended as the fourth of five supplementary historical treatises attached to a manuscript copy of Ibn Hazm's Jawamiʿ al-Sira preserved in the Habibiyya Library in India (transcribed in 1354 AH), which was subsequently photographed by the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts of the Arab League .

The work has appeared in print in several editions:

  • Edited by Ihsan Abbas and Nasir al-Din al-Asad as an appendix to Jawamiʿ al-Sira wa-Khams Rasa'il Ukhra, published by Dar al-Ma'arif in Egypt (pp. 339–350) .
  • Included by Ihsan Abbas in his compilation of Ibn Hazm's historical treatises within Rasa'il Ibn Hazm .
  • Edited by Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman Ibn ʿAqil al-Zahiri and ʿAbd al-Halim ʿUways under the title Jumal min al-Tarikh .
