Jiyad al-Musalsalat (The Best of Patterned Hadiths) is a concise hadith collection compiled by al-Jalal al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH / 1505 CE), gathering select narrations transmitted with sequential narrative features (al-ahadith al-musalsala).

Composition and Contents

Al-Suyuti compiled the treatise as an abridged selection from his larger work on the subject, al-Musalsalat al-Kubra, which comprises eighty-five narrations. In the opening of the text, al-Suyuti defined the criterion for his selection, stating: "This is a treatise that I selected from my compilation al-Musalsalat al-Kubra, confining myself therein to those of the soundest texts and the most elevated chains of transmission."

The collection begins with the Hadith of Priority (hadith al-awwaliyya). Alongside al-Musalsalat al-Kubra and al-Musalsalat al-Wusta, it forms part of al-Suyuti's specialized output on patterned transmissions.

Reception and Transmission

Later hadith scholars evaluated Jiyad al-Musalsalat as holding one of the soundest and highest ranks among compilations of musalsal hadiths, remarking that al-Suyuti incorporated a noteworthy selection of narrations in it that had not been assembled before him, despite the work's brevity. The work entered standard chains of transmission among later hadith collectors, including Abd al-Hayy al-Kattani, who recorded his isnad to the author. Manuscript copies of the text have been preserved in collections such as Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyya.
