Jawahir al-Suluk fi Amr al-Khulafa wa al-Muluk (Gems of Conduct Regarding the Affairs of Caliphs and Kings) is a concise historical chronicle of Egypt by the Egyptian historian Ibn Iyas (d. c. 930 AH / 1523 CE) .

Composition and Relation to Other Works

The work is one of three historical writings compiled by Ibn Iyas, alongside his major chronicle Bada'i' al-Zuhur fi Waqa'i' al-Duhur and another summary entitled 'Uqud al-Juman fi Waqa'i' al-Azman . Ibn Iyas finished Jawahir al-Suluk after Dhu al-Hijjah 905 AH, having completed 'Uqud al-Juman on 17 Rabi' al-Awwal 905 AH and prior to finishing Bada'i' al-Zuhur at the end of Dhu al-Hijjah 928 AH, thus drafting his abridgments while still working on his larger chronicle .

The text largely corresponds to 'Uqud al-Juman, though it is more concise in many places and contains a few additional details; it also includes occasional pieces of information absent from Bada'i' al-Zuhur .

Scope and Contents

The extant portion of the work provides an abridged account of the history of Egypt and those who governed it following the Islamic conquest, covering the period from Muharram 20 AH up to the end of the reign of the Mamluk sultan al-Zahir Abu Sa'id Qansuh al-Ashrafi in Dhu al-Hijjah 905 AH . It includes coverage of rulers and the Fatimid caliphs, with internal cross-references to biographical entries of the caliphs .

Manuscripts and Publication

A surviving manuscript of the work is preserved in the Ahmet III Library in Istanbul (MS 3026), and a photographic copy is held at the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts in Cairo (no. 205 Tarikh), comprising 165 folios . The text was transcribed directly from the author's copy during Ibn Iyas's lifetime in 916 AH by Ahmad ibn 'Ali al-Bawwab at al-Azhar .

The work was edited by Muhammad Zaynhum and published in Cairo in one volume .
