Jam al-Fawaid min Jami al-Usul wa Majma al-Zawaid (The Collection of Benefits from Jami al-Usul and Majma al-Zawaid) is an encyclopedic hadith compendium compiled by the Moroccan scholar Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Rudani (1037–1094 AH / 1627–1683 CE) . The work synthesizes the contents of two major secondary hadith compilations into a single organized reference, aiming to provide comprehensive access to the canonical traditions and extraneous narrations of early hadith literature .

Scope and Sources

Al-Rudani compiled the work by merging two primary foundational references: Ibn al-Athir al-Jazari's Jami al-Usul fi Ahadith al-Rasul and Nur al-Din al-Haythami's Majma al-Zawaid wa Manba al-Fawaid . In doing so, he integrated the source texts underlying both works alongside select additions:

  • From Jami al-Usul, which drew upon Razin ibn Muawiya al-Abdari's compilation of the Six Books, he incorporated narrations from Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abi Dawud, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa'i, and Malik ibn Anas's al-Muwatta, as well as Razin's additions .
  • From Majma al-Zawaid, which gathered traditions not found in the Six Books (treating Sunan Ibn Majah rather than the Muwatta as the sixth), he incorporated the extraneous narrations from Musnad Ahmad, Musnad Abi Ya'la, Musnad al-Bazzar, and al-Tabarani's three dictionaries (al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and al-Mu'jam al-Saghir) .
  • To address the variation among scholars regarding the sixth book of the primary canon, al-Rudani supplemented the work by extracting the specific zawaid (unique narrations) of Sunan Ibn Majah and Sunan al-Darimi and adding them directly to the collection .

In total, after eliminating duplicate source material, the compendium encompasses traditions from fourteen primary hadith works .

Methodology and Structure

Al-Rudani explained that he undertook the project because the sheer volume of both Jami al-Usul and Majma al-Zawaid made full mastery of their contents demanding for scholars . He organized the book according to thematic legal chapters (al-abwab al-fiqhiyya) rather than the alphabetical arrangement found in Jami al-Usul .

In structuring the material, he applied several editorial principles:

  • Elimination of repetition: If a hadith was repeated across multiple topical headings in the source texts, he placed it under the single most relevant chapter and removed it elsewhere, unless an additional textual benefit warranted retaining it .
  • Abridgment of chains: He omitted full isnads (chains of transmission), attributing each tradition directly to the primary compilation and citing the narrating Companion .
  • Evaluation of transmitters: For the supplementary narrations from Sunan Ibn Majah and Sunan al-Darimi, he provided assessments of transmitter reliability (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) based on biographical works such as al-Dhahabi's al-Kashif and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Tahdhib al-Tahdhib and Taqrib al-Tahdhib .

Manuscripts and Publication

Manuscript copies of the compilation are preserved in several international libraries, including the Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, Princeton University Library, the Feyzullah Efendi collection in Istanbul, the Egyptian National Library (Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyya) and al-Azhar in Cairo, as well as King Abdulaziz Library and the Islamic University Library in Medina .

The work has been edited by Abu Ali Sulayman ibn Duray' and published in four volumes by Maktabat Ibn Kathir in Kuwait and Dar Ibn Hazm in Beirut (1418 AH / 1998 CE) . Historical biographical dictionaries, such as Ismail Pasha al-Babani's Idah al-Maknun, also record the work as being structured across three large volumes .
