Ittifaq al-Mabani wa Iftiraq al-Maani (Agreement of Word-Forms and Divergence of Meanings) is an Arabic philological and lexicographical treatise by the Egyptian grammarian and man of letters al-Daqiqi (d. 613 AH / 1216 CE; also reported as 614 AH) . The work focuses on Arabic lexical semantics and homonymy, examining words that share identical morphological structures and surface forms but convey distinct definitions .

Subject and Content

Composed in a single volume, the treatise belongs to the Arabic lexicological genre devoted to homographs and semantic variation (المشترك اللفظي) . During these sessions, al-Daqiqi granted Yaqut a direct license (إجازة) to narrate and transmit his writings, among which Yaqut explicitly enumerated Ittifaq al-Mabani wa Iftiraq al-Maani . The book was also recorded among his major linguistic contributions in later biographical compendia by scholars such as al-Suyuti and Isma'il Pasha al-Babani .

Manuscript copies of the work have been preserved in Cairo at the Egyptian National Library (Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyya, historically cataloged under the Khedivial collection) and documented by the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts .
