Istinbatat al-Shaykh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi min al-Quran al-Karim Ard wa Dirasah (English: The Quranic Deductions of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi: Presentation and Study) is an academic study of Quranic exegesis by Saif bin Mansur al-Harthi that gathers and analyzes the textual deductions and inferences (istinbāṭāt) of the Najdi scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi . The work was originally prepared as a doctoral dissertation in Quranic studies at the College of Usul al-Din at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, and was published by Dar Qanadil al-Ilm in 1437 AH / 2016 CE as part of its Quranic studies series .

Purpose and Scope

The book focuses on extracting, organizing, and evaluating the legal, theological, ethical, educational, and governance-related deductions that al-Saadi derived from the Quran beyond mere literal exegesis . Al-Harthi aimed to study al-Saadi's interpretive methodology and demonstrate how scholars derive rulings and guidance from the Quranic text .

Structure

The work is organized into an introduction, a preliminary chapter, two main parts, a conclusion, and technical indices :

  • Preamble: Defines deduction (istinbāṭ) linguistically and technically, its importance, and the methods used to reach it .
  • Part One: Examines al-Saadi and his methodology across five chapters:
    1. A concise biography of al-Saadi, covering his life, creed, legal school, teachers, students, scholarly standing, works, and death .
    2. The phrasing formulas of deduction (ṣiyagh al-istinbāṭ) and his style of presenting them .
    3. The subject categories of al-Saadi's Quranic deductions, divided into eight areas: Quranic sciences, creed (ʿaqīdah), jurisprudence (fiqh), legal theory (uṣūl al-fiqh), linguistics, Quranic inimitability (iʿjāz), educational and behavioral ethics, and Islamic governance (al-siyāsah al-sharʿiyyah) .
    4. Al-Saadi's modes and rules of deduction across eleven topics, addressing textual implications such as concomitant indication (dalālat al-iltizām), divergent implication (mafhūm al-mukhālafah), convergent implication (mafhūm al-muwāfaqah), conjunction (dalālat al-iqtirān), inclusion (dalālat al-taḍammun), analogy (qiyās), recurring Quranic stylistic patterns, and deductions from clear, obscure, single, or combined verses .
    5. Al-Saadi's relationship with earlier exegetes' deductions, identifying his primary influences—principally Ibn al-Qayyim, followed by Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Kathir, alongside minor influences from the Companions and Successors—as well as his critiques of other exegetes and the defining features of his deductions .
  • Part Two: An applied study analyzing al-Saadi's deductions sequentially through the Quran, from Surah al-Fatihah to Surah al-Nas .
  • Conclusion and Indices: Summarizes the research findings, followed by eight indices covering Quranic verses, variant readings (qirāʾāt), hadiths and reports, biographical figures, sects and tribes, locations, sources, and subjects .

Method

Al-Harthi used an inductive and analytical approach . He gathered deductions across al-Saadi's corpus—including his exegesis and specialized treatises—and arranged them according to the traditional order of the Quranic chapters and verses . For each entry, the author cites the relevant segment of the verse, quotes al-Saadi's deduction verbatim, and assigns it a continuous serial number . He then follows each entry with an analytical evaluation (al-dirāsah) that explains the mechanism of the deduction (wajh al-istinbāṭ), assesses its evidentiary validity (ḥujjiyyah), and classifies the type of textual indication connecting the verse to the derived ruling or benefit .

Findings and Features

The study concludes that al-Saadi's deductions span multiple fields, predominantly jurisprudence, Quranic sciences, creed, and behavioral ethics . In deriving them, al-Saadi made the greatest use of divergent implication (mafhūm al-mukhālafah), followed by concomitant indication, analogy, and regularities of Quranic style . The author notes that al-Saadi's deductions are distinguished by their clarity of expression, jurisprudential grounding, safety from theological deviations, and attention to contemporary applications, while also examining the critiques that scholars have directed at certain aspects of his exegesis .
