Islah Ghalat Abi Ubayd fi Gharib al-Hadith (Correcting the Errors of Abu Ubayd in Gharib al-Hadith) is a work of linguistic criticism written by Ibn Qutaybah (d. 276 AH / 889 CE) to identify and correct philological inaccuracies in the famous Gharib al-Hadith of Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam (d. 224 AH) .

Purpose and Content

The treatise—also referred to by Ibn Qutaybah as Islah al-Ghalat and Tabyin al-Ghalat—is dedicated to the linguistic scrutiny of obscure vocabulary (gharib) found in hadith traditions . Ibn Qutaybah examines fifty-three specific points where he argues that Abu Ubayd had slipped in interpreting the phrasing or meaning of traditions . Despite challenging Abu Ubayd's conclusions, Ibn Qutaybah adopts a respectful and modest tone in his preface, acknowledging the elder scholar's vast erudition and noting that his errors were minuscule compared to the overwhelming correctness of his work . Ibn Qutaybah substantiates his corrections with Arabic grammatical rules, lexical evidence, and textual argumentation .

Reception and Influence

The work sparked notable debates among classical philologists and traditionists:

  • Critiques and Defenses of Abu Ubayd: The treatise drew sharp pushback from scholars seeking to defend Abu Ubayd. Muhammad ibn Nasr al-Marwazi penned a short treatise refuting Ibn Qutaybah's objections . Ibn Faris critiqued several of Ibn Qutaybah's points in al-Sahibi, and Ibn al-Anbari contested his findings across his works, including al-Addad and his own Gharib al-Hadith .
  • Lexicographical Incorporation: Subsequent lexicographers made substantial use of Ibn Qutaybah's corrections. Abu Mansur al-Azhari referenced these corrections in the preface of Tahdhib al-Lughah, systematically integrating the corrected readings into relevant root entries . The book's linguistic insights were also utilized by Abu Ubayd al-Harawi in al-Gharibayn, Abu Mansur al-Jawaliqi in al-Mu'arrab, al-Zamakhshari, and Ibn Manzur .

Transmission and Modern Publication

The book was transmitted through recognized Andalusian isnads, including via Qasim ibn Asbagh directly from Ibn Qutaybah, as documented by Ibn Khayr al-Ishbili . In modern scholarship, Hellmut Ritter published an introductory study of the text in the journal Der Islam in 1929 . The text was first edited by Gérard Lecomte and published in Beirut in 1968 in the Mélanges de l'Université Saint-Joseph, and a later critical edition was edited by Abd Allah al-Jabburi and published in 1403 AH / 1983 CE .
