Isbal al-Matar ala Qasab al-Sukkar Nazm Nukhbat al-Fikar fi Mustalah Ahl al-Athar is a work on hadith terminology by the Yemeni scholar al-Amir al-San'ani (1099–1182 AH / 1688–1768 CE), written as a commentary on his own didactic poem, Qasab al-Sukkar.

Background and Composition

The base text for the commentary is al-San'ani's poem Qasab al-Sukkar, which is a versification of Nukhbat al-Fikar fi Mustalah Ahl al-Athar by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (d. 852 AH). Composed in the rajaz meter, the poem consists of 203 verses according to one count, and 206 verses according to another. The poem opens with praise of God and closes with prayers upon the Prophet Muhammad and his family, followed by a supplication for a righteous end.

Al-San'ani completed authoring his commentary on the poem in 1173 AH.

Method and Content

In the prologue, al-San'ani states that he wrote the commentary to untangle the structures of his poem, illuminate its meanings, and provide the essential rules and preferred positions in hadith methodology while maintaining conciseness. Throughout the text, he discusses textual problems and adduces proofs and criticisms relating to Ibn Hajar's work, including citations from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Wazir's abridgment of the Nukhba.

Related Works and Editions

In addition to al-San'ani's autocommentary, Qasab al-Sukkar was also commented upon by Abd al-Karim ibn Murad al-Athari in a work titled Sahh al-Matar.
