Irwa al-Ghalil fi Takhrij Ahadith Manar al-Sabil (Quenching the Thirst in Sourcing the Hadiths of Manar al-Sabil) is a multi-volume hadith verification (takhrij) reference work by the hadith scholar Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE), dedicated to sourcing and evaluating the legal traditions cited in the Hanbali jurisprudence manual Manar al-Sabil .

Origin and Motivation

The base text, Manar al-Sabil, was written by the Hanbali jurist Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Salim ibn Duwayyan (d. 1353 AH) as an evidential commentary on Dalil al-Talib by Mar'i ibn Yusuf al-Karmi (d. 1033 AH) . The proposal to write a dedicated takhrij of the work emerged during a gathering in Damascus hosted by the publisher Zuhayr al-Shawish, attended by scholars such as Muhammad Bahjat al-Baytar, Mustafa al-Siba'i, and Issam al-Attar, after Manar al-Sabil was printed . The idea was supported by scholars and figures including Muhammad ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Mani', Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, Muhammad Nasif, Abd Allah ibn Zayd al-Mahmud, and Qasim al-Darwish, leading al-Shawish to commission al-Albani for the task .

Al-Albani articulated several reasons for undertaking the project:

  • Manar al-Sabil contained an exceptionally rich collection of legal evidences—totaling around three thousand traditions, predominantly attributed directly to the Prophet ﷺ—a density uncommon for a concise two-volume manual .
  • There was no published, comprehensive takhrij work serving Hanbali fiqh comparable to Jamal al-Din al-Zayla'i's Nasb al-Raya for Hanafi jurisprudence or Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Talkhis al-Habir for Shafi'i jurisprudence .
  • Providing an accessible reference to aid students and researchers of Islamic jurisprudence in general, and Hanbali scholars in particular .

Method and Structure

Al-Albani completed the manuscript over fifteen years before its initial publication, frequently cross-referencing it in his other writings . His methodological approach in the book includes:

  • Stating the overarching verdict on the narration (such as ṣaḥīḥ, ḥasan, or ḍaʿīf) at the beginning of each entry .
  • Sourcing the narrations by identifying the compilers and primary collections, citing specific volume and page references rather than generic chapter headings .
  • Detailed analysis of the chains of transmission (asānīd) to establish soundness or weakness; an exhaustive discussion of the chain is dispensed with if the tradition was recorded by al-Bukhari, Muslim, or both .
  • Organizing the routes of transmission according to the narrators from each Companion, evaluating supporting paths (mutābaʿāt) and corroborating texts (shawāhid), and highlighting subtle transmission defects such as misrepresentation (tadlīs) and non-explicit transmission terms (ʿanʿana) .

Publication

The book was published by al-Maktab al-Islami in Beirut under the supervision of Zuhayr al-Shawish . The first edition appeared in 1399 AH (1979 CE), and a second revised edition was issued in 1405 AH (1985 CE) . The work comprises eight volumes of hadith extraction covering over 2,700 narrations, accompanied by a ninth volume containing comprehensive analytical indexes and the original text of Manar al-Sabil .

Supplements and Related Works

A number of scholars authored supplements and studies engaging with Irwa al-Ghalil:

  • Al-Takmil lima Fata Takhrijuhu min Irwa' al-Ghalil by Salih ibn Abd al-Aziz Al al-Shaykh, which gathered narrations and Companion reports (āthār) from Manar al-Sabil that al-Albani had left unverified or had not located .
  • Al-Tahjil fi Takhrij ma lam Yukhraj min al-Ahadith wa-l-Athar fi Irwa' al-Ghalil by Abd al-Aziz al-Tarifi, serving as a further supplement for traditions and non-prophetic reports omitted from the original text .
  • Mustadrak al-Ta'lil 'ala Irwa' al-Ghalil by Ahmad al-Khalil, offering critical remarks on al-Albani's hadith judgments, which prompted rejoinders in defense of Irwa al-Ghalil, including Radd al-Jamil fi al-Dhabbi 'an Irwa' al-Ghalil by Abd Allah al-Ubaylan and Iqamat al-Dalil 'ala 'Uluww Rutbat Irwa' al-Ghalil by Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Abi al-Aynayn .
