Irshad al-Mubtadi wa-Tadhkirat al-Muntahi fi al-Qiraat al-Ashr (Guidance for the Beginner and Reminder for the Advanced in the Ten Recitations) is a classical manual on Quranic readings by the Iraqi scholar Abu al-Izz al-Qalansi (435–521 AH / 1043–1127 CE) . It serves as a comprehensive reference documenting the ten canonical recitations along with their various transmission lines and variants .
Structure and Content
The author outlines the recitations preserved across the Hejaz, the Levant, and Iraq . The book is organized into three primary sections:
- Chains of transmission (al-asānīd): al-Qalansi details his individual transmission chains connecting back to each of the ten canonical reading traditions .
- General phonological and grammatical rules (al-uṣūl): This section addresses systematic variant rules chapter by chapter, providing textual examples for issues such as the realization and softening of the hamza (al-hamz wa-al-talyīn), assimilation and distinct pronunciation (al-idghām wa-al-tabyīn), phonetic inclination and velarization (al-imālah wa-al-tafkhīm), vowel elongation and abbreviation (al-madd wa-al-qaṣr), addition and elision (al-ithbāt wa-al-ḥadhf), as well as pausing and resuming (al-waqf wa-al-ibtidāʾ) .
- Surah-by-surah variants (al-farsh): This section traces specific textual variations through the order of the Quranic text, opening with the differences over the basmalah, followed by Surah al-Fatihah, Surah al-Baqarah, and Surah Al Imran, and concluding each chapter by detailing its attached pronominal and additional yāʾ letters (al-yāʾāt) where applicable .
Methodology and Reception
In compiling the manual, al-Qalansi restricted his selections to the best-known variants (al-ashhar) and transmission lines that he considered decisively verified (mā qaṭaʿa bihi ʿindahu) . The work was met with broad scholarly acceptance and gained notable popularity across Iraq, where it held a position comparable to Abu Amr al-Dani's al-Taysir fi al-Qiraat al-Sab in other regions . According to Ibn al-Jazari, students in Iraq memorized al-Irshad extensively, prompting scholars in Wasit and Baghdad to compose poetic versifications of its contents . It was also referred to as al-ʿAsharah al-Ṣaghīrah . Ibn al-Jazari relied heavily on the text and incorporated its transmissions into his foundational work al-Nashr fi al-Qiraat al-Ashr .
Modern Publication
The work was edited as an academic master's thesis at Umm al-Qura University by Omar Hamdan al-Kubaysi and published in a single volume by al-Maktaba al-Faysaliyya in Mecca in 1404 AH (1983–1984 CE) .
