Irq Nafsak wa Ahlak binafsik (Perform Ruqyah on Yourself and Your Family by Yourself) is a treatise on Islamic spiritual healing (ruqyah) by Dr. Khalid al-Juraysi, published as the fifth installment in the Zad al-Mu'min series.
Background and Purpose
The work was compiled to provide Muslims with an accessible guide to performing lawful spiritual healing (al-ruqyah al-shar'iyyah) using verses from the Quran and authentic Prophetic supplications, allowing individuals to treat themselves and their families directly for both physical and spiritual ailments. Al-Juraysi selected the invocations drawing upon established traditions and the practical experience of reputable practitioners, testing them upon himself and his relatives before publishing the material.
Structure and Content
The book opens with introductory discussions covering the reality of the evil eye (al-'ayn) and sorcery (al-sihr), their respective treatment methods, the definition and legal guidelines of ruqyah, conditions for its full efficacy, and factors that accelerate healing. It outlines ten means to avert the harm of enviers, points of contemplation to lighten the burden of affliction, and general practical instructions.
The core text divides the recitations into three distinct tiers to suit different needs:
- A concise ruqyah: A brief selection of Quranic verses and authentic Prophetic supplications designed for preventative use and suitable for children under the age of puberty.
- An intermediate ruqyah: A medium-length compilation intended for general application by any Muslim when time permits.
- An extensive ruqyah: A detailed, lengthy compilation from the Quran and Sunnah intended for experienced practitioners dealing with complex or stubborn afflictions that require prolonged treatment.
Rather than following the traditional order of the Quranic text, the verses in the book are grouped thematically (such as verses of praise and glorification, verses against sorcery, and verses against the evil eye) to help the reciter focus directly on specific afflictions and memorize the passages more easily.
The treatise concludes with three appendices:
- Physical supportive treatments mentioned in tradition, including water, lotus leaves (sidr), olive oil, and honey.
- Daily morning and evening remembrances (adhkar) for protection against the machinations of devils among humans and jinn.
- Common symptoms experienced by individuals afflicted with sorcery, the evil eye, or demonic touch (al-mass), enabling the reciter to assess the patient's condition before beginning treatment.
Reception and Related Works
The work received a written commendation from Sheikh Dr. Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Jibreen dated 24 Muharram 1425 AH, in which he commended the author's selection of verified prayers and relevant Quranic passages for personal and household protection.
To assist those unable to read, the ruqyah passages were also made available in an audio recording. Al-Juraysi authored several companion and related treatises on the topic, including al-Ruqyah al-Shar'iyyah (in which the verses were rearranged according to the standard order of the Quran), al-'Ilaj wa-l-Ruqa, and al-Fatawa al-Dhahabiyyah fi al-Ruqa al-Shar'iyyah.
