I'rab al-Qur'an al-Karim (commonly known as I'rab al-Qur'an lil-Da'as) is a contemporary reference work on Quranic grammatical parsing (i'rab) compiled jointly by Ahmad 'Ubayd al-Da'as, Ahmad Muhammad Humaydan, and Isma'il Mahmud al-Qasim .

Purpose and Scope

The authors prepared the work to address what they perceived as an excess of exegetical, rhetorical, and linguistic expansions in earlier Quranic parsing literature, noting that modern readers often require a direct and focused grammatical breakdown . Consequently, the work limits itself strictly to grammatical analysis, following an abbreviated method designed to make syntax accessible and manageable .

Methodology

In their introduction, the authors outlined eleven specific methodological principles governing their grammatical treatment :

  • Abbreviated terminology: Designating past, present, and imperative verbs simply as madin, mudari', and amr without repeatedly stating the word "verb" (fi'l) .
  • Omission of basic inflectional markers: Omitting explicit mentions of regular inflected case endings and fixed vowels (harakat al-i'rab wa-l-bina'), relying on the reader's foundational knowledge of Arabic grammar .
  • Prepositional phrases: Omitting the term jar wa-majrur at times, sufficing with stating that the elements are attached (muta'alliqan) or indicating their syntactic position directly (as predicate, adjective, or circumstantial qualifier) .
  • Demonstrative and relative pronouns: Often stating their grammatical position (mahall) directly without explicitly prefixing their formal classifications (ism al-isharah or ism al-mawsul) .
  • Conjunctive particles: Frequently parsing only the subsequent sentence (e.g., as coordinated [ma'tufah] or resumptive [musta'nafah]) rather than analyzing the particle separately .
  • Attached pronouns: Omitting the parsing of attached pronouns (al-dama'ir al-muttasilah) whenever their grammatical function is obvious .
  • Flexible word order: Departing at times from the rigid linear sequence of individual words within a sentence to avoid repetitive formulations .
  • Selection of the simplest interpretation: Choosing the most straightforward grammatical opinion whenever multiple parsing possibilities (wujuh al-i'rab) exist, intentionally avoiding complicated alternatives .
  • Defective verbs and nominal particles: Summarizing the parsing of verbs like kana and particles like inna with concise designations along with their subjects and predicates .
  • Gradation of detail: Providing extensive grammatical explanations in the opening sections of the work and adopting greater brevity in subsequent sections .
  • Lexical definitions: Explaining selected word meanings in the early parts of the book, after which readers are directed to standard reference works for vocabulary .

Publication

The work was published in its first edition in 1425 AH (2004 CE) by Dar al-Munir and Dar al-Farabi in Damascus .
