Ikram al-Dayf (Honoring the Guest) is a hadith treatise compiled by the Baghdadi traditionist and jurist Ibrahim al-Harbi (198–285 AH / 815–898 CE), collecting prophetic traditions and reports on hospitality and the rights of guests .

Contents and Scope

The work belongs to the genre of thematic hadith monographs (ajza'), bringing together narrations with their chains of transmission (isnad) regarding the virtue of hospitality, honoring visitors, and the ethical obligations of a host . Among the texts transmitted by al-Harbi in the work are narrations of the prophetic hadith: مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ ضَيْفَهُ ("Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honor his guest") through Companions such as Abu Shurayh al-Khuza'i and Ubayy ibn Ka'b . It also includes reports concerning the hosting practices of the Companions, such as an incident involving Abu al-Darda' .

Transmission and Reception

The book was preserved and transmitted through hadith scholars across generations. It was related directly from Ibrahim al-Harbi by Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Anbari (also cited as Ibn Abi al-Haytham), from whom Abu Nu'aym al-Isfahani transmitted it . Later hadith authorities documented their chains of transmission for the work, including Salah al-Din al-Ala'i and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, who traced its transmission via al-Hafiz Yusuf ibn Khalil and Ishaq ibn Yahya al-Amidi .

Publication

The text has been published in modern editions, including an edition edited by Abd Allah ibn 'A'id al-Gharazi published by Maktabat al-Sahaba in Tanta (1407 AH / 1987 CE), as well as an edition issued by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah .
