Ijla al-Haqiqa fi Sirat Aisha al-Siddiqa (Unveiling the Truth in the Biography of Aisha al-Siddiqa) is a biographical and apologetic work by Yasin al-Khalifa al-Tayyib al-Mahjub, dedicated to detailing the life, virtues, and scholarship of Aisha bint Abi Bakr, as well as defending her against historical and modern criticisms .
Background and Purpose
The author prepared the work to participate in the "Our Mother Aisha, Queen of Chastity" research competition organized by the Dorar Foundation (Mawqi‘ al-Durar al-Saniyya) . Mahjub noted that his impetus for undertaking this detailed study was the resurgence of contemporary polemics and slander against Aisha, which prompted him to compile a comprehensive work on her merits and respond systematically to recurring allegations . In the acknowledgments, the author recorded assistance received from his brother, Abu Sahl Taha al-Zayyati, specifically in the preparation of the chapters addressing polemical claims and doubts .
Structure and Contents
The book comprises an introduction, six main chapters, a conclusion outlining findings and recommendations, and subject and bibliography indices :
- Introduction: Covers the significance of the topic, the author's motives, outline, methodology, and acknowledgments .
- Chapter 1 (Life of Aisha): Divided into six sections addressing her name and lineage, birth and upbringing, marriage to the Prophet, standing with the Prophet, standing among the believers, and her death .
- Chapter 2 (Virtues and Merits): Discusses her physical and moral characteristics, scholarly standing across fields such as Quranic sciences, Hadith, jurisprudence (fiqh), language, poetry, and medicine, followed by the shared and exclusive virtues of Aisha .
- Chapter 3 (Relations with Ahl al-Bayt): Analyzes Aisha’s positive relations with Ali ibn Abi Talib, Fatima al-Zahra, and Ali's descendants and the broader prophetic household .
- Chapter 4 (Refutation of Fabrications and Doubts): Addresses specific polemical claims made by the Rafidites—including allegations regarding poisoning, the slander of Mariya al-Qibtiyya, alleged resentment toward Uthman ibn Affan, the burial of Al-Hasan ibn Ali, and accusations of dishonesty—as well as doubts surrounding the Battle of the Camel, the veil (hijab), and domestic interactions .
- Chapter 5 (Lessons of the Slander Incident): Details the positive implications and benefits derived from both the historical Incident of the Slander (al-Ifk) and its modern recurrences .
- Chapter 6 (Legal Ruling on Insulting Aisha): Examines the Islamic legal rulings regarding those who revile Aisha, distinguishing between accusations related to matters from which divine revelation exonerated her and other forms of abuse .
Methodology
In compiling the study, Mahjub followed specific research guidelines:
- Citing hadiths and historical narrations directly from primary collections, prioritizing the two Sahih compilations of al-Bukhari and Muslim, then the four Sunan, the remaining nine major books of Hadith, and other canonical collections .
- Authenticating narrations by citing verdicts of established hadith scholars or applying hadith critical methods to isnads and texts when established gradings were unavailable .
- Providing full vocalization (tashkil) for hadiths and complex terminology .
- Adding brief biographical notices for historical figures upon their first mention and glossing rare or difficult vocabulary through classical dictionaries and specialized works on rare terms (gharib al-hadith) .
